This book by Denise Weldon-Sibiy is part of her graduate level course for MLIS and draws from her experience as a self-published author and six years as an Acquisitions Associate in the Technical Services department of an academic library. Her focus is two-pronged- self-published authors and librarians. Denise Weldon-Sibiy compiles research from her graduate course, and includes her experiences and her self-published works.Chapters in the beginning provide definitions of self-published, descriptions of publishing models in the spectrum of traditional publishers to self-publishing, self-published markets, the growth of self-published books. If you are curious about the most common reason given for self-publishing, Weldon-Sibiy writes that ‘studies of self published authors find that the most common reason given was…the desire of authors to control the publishing process.’In a later interesting chapter on librarian bias, she writes that this negative opinion is perhaps the greatest hurdle for self-published books to be included in libraries. In reading about library costs, it was informative to find out that the cost of adding a self-published book to the library can be more than the purchase price of the book. Other interesting reads are on the funding of libraries, vendors, technical services, and the future of self-publishing and libraries.
Stop. Wait. Before you open the first page of this book, I'm going to make a very important recommendation. Go get a pen, go get some paper. You're going to want to make some notes as you go through this book - because wow, does it have a wealth of useful information.Without a doubt, Denise Weldon-Siviy knows her stuff, and in the case of this book, that is all about opening the doorway to libraries for authors in the self-publishing world. To start with, Weldon-Siviy sets the scene by discussing the nature of the self-publishing world. A lot of this authors will already know, but it sets a good baseline for the rest of the book, which looks in detail at the requirements for self-publishers to get their work placed into libraries. This isn't a step-by-step guide for you to follow in order to get from A to B, it's not as simple as that. Rather, it enlightens you to the whole process and the essential steps to take in order to be considered. There is generally useful information too - such as how to approach some of the review locations that libraries pay attention to.This is an incredibly thorough book that will reward re-reading. And, like I say, take notes, you're certain to find them useful. Now I'm off to set about getting on the library shelves!
If you’re a self-published author interested in getting your books into libraries, or if you’re a librarian interested in expanding your collection to include books by indie authors, this book has some useful and enlightening information within its pages. Understanding how libraries vet their collections and what kinds of reviews they rely on is helpful for self-published authors. And perhaps opening the eyes of librarians to the built-in biases in the book selection process might be helpful. The author’s discussion of how libraries work helped me understand the challenges authors face in breaking into libraries. It’s a chatty book, with lots of personal opinions thrown in. And the author admits up front that she has a bias since she, herself, is a self-published author. But she also worked in libraries, so she has some experience and insight to draw upon.A worthwhile read – especially for the price.
I read this book from my own point of view as a veteran of over 30 years working in libraries AND as an experienced and fairly savvy independent author (self-published). I was looking for a good basic book that I could recommend to my librarian colleagues as well as to other authors. This book fit the bill very nicely. And that's an understatement.Yes, there are sections and considerations that won't apply to your particular situation. You ought to read this book with the understanding that the "author-library relationship" is a moving target that is changing as rapidly as self-publishing is changing. So you'll need to take info from this book as a starting point for your self-education, not as an everlasting and permanent textbook. That said:This book ought to be among the first books read by collections development librarians and book selection librarians. It will help you avoid confusion and misinformation about who is and is not a self-published or indie author. It will also help you develop your library's selection policies and procedures for dealing with authors of all stripes who seek to have their books selected by your library. As an indie author, I can also say that any author who even mildly considers marketing to libraries ought to invest the time to read and study this book. It will help you avoid making amateurish mistakes that will have little no ROI. This book will help you better understand the issues and limitations that libraries face (such as budget restraints, limited shelf space, limited staff time, and the specific patrons and programs that each particular library is mandated to serve and prioritize). If you want to market your books to libraries (or even give copies to libraries), this book will help you become a more professional and competitive marketer. For librarians and authors alike, this book will help you avoid common misperceptions about each other. Both of you will be able to act more professional towards one another, communicate better, and figure things out. In other words, you'll be able to work together more effectively.Once you have read this book, go back over it and make some notes and jot down some questions. Then, to get even more advanced and nuanced info, start by doing searches on the internet; you'll probably be able to locate the information you need for your situation (or locate someone who might be able to advise you).Bottom Line: The time you invest in this book and in investigating further will be well worth it.
