Excellent for beginners. Good learning process though it assumes you have site administrator permission level which some newbies may not get or understand. This could lead to some frustration. But overall, it is great for first time exposure and learning your way around SP!

(Background): Emily Post was an American journalist whose seminal work ETIQUETTE IN SOCIETY, IN BUSINESS, IN POLITICS, AND AT HOME was first published in 1922. While nobody today would refer to it for advice on getting along in society (however construed), it remains a fascinating read for its insights into 1920's New York City social life and socializing, and for its not inconsiderable use of humor in getting the author's advice across. Emily Post founded the Emily Post Institute in 1946, and under those auspices EMILY POST'S ETIQUETTE, NINETEENTH EDITION, has now appeared. Although it is a convention in publishing to proclaim each new model of an ongoing work "fully" or "completely" revised, this one is not -- not could it or should it be. Specifically, this one shows direct lineage from the Seventeenth Edition of 2004. (The intervening Eighteenth edition dates from 2011 -- these updates appear with some regularity.) The new Nineteenth shows emergence of two of Emily's great-great-grandchildren (yes, two greats), Lizzie Post and Daniel Post Senning, as sole authors. That's an awful lot of lineage but then, it has been 95 years since the original ETIQUETTE appeared.On the whole I think the new Nineteenth is a good and useful book. Readers will find the same good sense as in predecessor editions with advice in how to converse with new acquaintances in both social and business settings (it forthrightly advocates a healthy dose of "small talk" in the beginning), and the whole huge field of behavior in and around weddings receives its due. Happily, an illustration in the book showed me, finally, how to fit my writing to the now-dominant “informal” type of folded card, should I wish to depart from the old “Monarch”-sized sheet that served me so well for so many years. What is notable is the larger field given to electronic social media like Facebook, what behaviors to emulate and which to avoid, and better yet, why. I was a bit surprised to see that the rules on when and when not to remove a hat required a full table, when it's pretty apparent that little has changed: women who wear fancy hats don't take them off except to avoid blocking someone's view or for their own comfort; women who wear the nearly ubiquitous visored "baseball" cap, just like men, take them off when indoors. (Granted, "indoors" in an era of domed stadiums and climatized shopping malls needs extra construction.)This latest book is going to be very helpful to those who use it; however, like most such etiquette guides it is written from the perspective of its authors, therefore aimed mainly at young adults or married young adults with families. It is gentle and kind, and written with a smile, does not shy away from most hot-button topics yet contains remarkably little humor. I miss the old general-purpose guides like MISS MANNERS' GUIDE TO EXCRUCIATINGLY CORRECT BEHAVIOR (a book that so embodied humor even its title is a bit humorous) -- or, for that matter, the original 1922 Emily Post ETIQUETTE with its endearingly annoying types like "Mr. Gotrox" or "Mrs. Toplofty" who exemplify bad behavior whatever their intentions. Lately a kind of alt-field of etiquette books has emerged, the kind written for well-intentioned people who occasionally use the "F" word, so to speak -- those have LOTS of humor, much of it sardonic. Sadly, none of the literature I've consulted speaks directly to a concern of mine: When did it become rude to telephone neighbors and friends spontaneously at home, well before bedtime? My purpose is not to proclaim how old-fashioned or obstinate I may be, but simply to avoid causing pain -- and what I can do about it. This is supposed to be a central concern of etiquette.A note that did not influence my rating: I ordered and paid for the thumb-indexed version, but instead received the "smooth" one..

I have the Emily Post Etiquette 17th Edition, and the 19th Edition. I am very disappointed with the 19th Edition. Compared to the 17th Edition it lacks a LOT of valuable information. I am continually having to refer back to the 17th edition to fill in the blanks. For example: In regards to sending Birth Announcements on the arrival of a new baby, the 19th addition says to do so, but NOT WHEN! The 17th Edition tells you that as soon as the baby is named, you should send out birth announcements. There are many other omissions like this in the 19th Edition that was put together by a "younger" generation. I recommend you get the 17th Edition. I am not familiar with the 18th Edition.

As society becomes increasingly coarse, it is best to separate and distinguish yourself from the rabble. If you want to know how to deal with conflict, how to properly handle correspondence, deal with gossip and dine with finesse, this is what you need. It is more than saying, thank you and please, it is a guide book that will help you navigate the elite circles that you will find yourself in and advance your career. What you don’t know CAN hurt you; but knowing the language, the code of the elite will help you, and Emily Post’s guide is one of the top five etiquette books you should buy without question.

It has answers for even my trickiest, most specific questions. A wonderful resource. Well organized for easy reference.

This is clearly written, but quite a large book. So far, about 60 pages in, I love it.

When I was a little girl I loved paper dolls. I had them in all shapes and sizes. My most favorites were the Brenda Starr paper dolls that appeared in the Chicago Tribune Sunday Comics, very glamorous. Why am I m telling you this, because my friend, Randy Bryan Bigham (see his Profile on nenasnotes on January 8, 2018) who is THE authority on all things Lucile Duff Gordon, the Couturier, (see January 12th post) has given us a wonderful insight into the clothes worn on the Titanic. By now we are all very familiar with the fact and fiction of this ill-fated voyage. By seeing some of the garments, worn by 6 of the women, of different stages of society, as illustrated by the renowned artist, Norma Lu Meehan, makes them even more real to us. Randy has provided a thumbnail sketch of each of these women.I for one can't wait to get my hands on the book when it is published... I will actually need two, one to treasure and make its home in my fashion library, the other to cut up and play dress up with like I did as a child. Lovely dolls featuring a cross-section of women whom were on The Titanic and the elaborate ( the 1st Class passengers,that is)wardrobes they brought with them. Beside The Legendary "Unsinkable" Margaret(Molly) Brown,there's also Lady Duff-Gordon;a renowned fashion designer and a movie actress who ironically stared in a movie about the tragedy only a month after it happened .On the other end,there's a doll of a young Irishwoman from Steerage who didn't survive the sinking. Besides being beautiful to look at, this Paper Doll book is a great introduction to these fascinating woman and the tragedy that they (mostly) survived.

Wonderful paper dolls book that includes someone in my family -- but even more importantly, she was a second-class passenger. The book also features a third-class passenger. In other words, the fashion isn't confined just to very wealthy women. Terrific!

Beautiful! I have several books of period dress paper dolls, but this one is specific to a year: 1912. I expect it to be a big help when I'm putting together costumes for an event I attend.

This is worth a read. Well worth it. I once read that 70% of all visits to the doctor are because of lifestyle. Smoking, drinking, too much food, too little exercise. This book tends to confirm that. While prostate related problems do get worse just because you age or because you have a family history, there is still a lot you can do about it. Exercise and diet being the big things. The plus is these things will help you ward off a lot of other problems. There's also a lot of discussion about doctor's over treating people who indeed have prostate issues, something that's been publicized elsewhere. I didn't notice before buying this is 500 pages long. There is a lot of stuff here, all sorts of possible prostate problems and treatment modalities are discussed in detail with references to case studies. A lot of the stuff is new to me, some not. I know I should exercise more, eat less but in any case it doesn't hurt to be reminded. Lots of nice little anecdotes. Like the Okinawans saying a prayer before they eat that they will stop eating before they are full. I'm going to tell myself that now each time I sit to eat and be conscious of it. Well worth the $20 or whatever it was I paid.

I am not a doctor but these are my thoughts: you need to read this book..if you rely soley on your local urologist, you may be minus your testicles, living out of a diaper..better do some research on your own!! don't let them scare you into procedures you may not need...

Over the years I have purchased every book on the prostate to hit the market. This book is far and away the best. Current, authorative, comprehensive and easy to read and understand. Where other books complexify the material and take the reader through the "tall grass" Dr. Carter excels at clear and concise explanations that anticipate your questions and tailor the response in simple scientific terms. The result----you end up with clarity and confidence and are empowered to understand the issues and make informed decisions. Dr Carter has been the real "power behind the throne" at Johns Hopkins on the subject of the prostate and is internationally recognized as "the" authority in the field of prostate Cancer. You will not be disappointed with your purchase of this book.

This is my 8th book on the prostate and prostate cancer. I'm in the process of discovering what level of process can I may have (PSA spiked several months ago). What distinguishes this book from most of the others is that it not only helps educate you about the prostate and various forms of prostate diseases, it tells you the things you can do NOW to turn things around--whether you wish to avoid prostate cancer in the future or if you've already been diagnosed with it. This book teaches you how to change the environment in your body making it as hostile as possible for cancer to exist and thrive. As you might imagine, this involves: nutrition and exercise.Going through a diagnosis of prostate cancer is terrifying; it makes you feel hopeless and without any control over the circumstances of your disease. This book empowers you to take hold of your life and DO something that can fight the disease or prevent it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This book is really only useful for men who plan to live beyond age 50 or the women who care about them. Actually, much of the book addresses issues that women over age 50 also share, so even man haters will likely find useful information in here. So much of what causes suffering long term could be prevented by some simple changes in daily activities. There are bad things you can do occasionally that can change your life, but the good things that can change your life need to become habits that you follow every week and almost every day. Read the book, develop new habits, or suffer the consequences and know that they are likely your own fault.

I read this and Dr. Walshes book. I preferred this book. It has more of a current medical tone. Both are preeminent in their field. Both have spent their careers at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Carter is still working. He basically invented active surveillance. Both books are around five years old, but there haven't been that many big changes since these came out. If your psa is going up or if you have family history of prostate cancer you need to read these books. It will help you understand the diagnosis and treatment options much better. When you know more, you can ask much better questions about your lab results. Most urologists don't have the time to provide the kind of detailed explanations in these books.You owe it to yourself and your family to understand this. Ignore the mumbo jumbo diet/supplements books. They are useless and delay in real diagnosis and treatment is not your friend.

The book is written in an interesting and non-technical style and is very readable.
