Gorka is now a member of the government and we should read his book to see what he thinks. He presents his points clearly and plainly without a lot of literary flourish.I will also say that I have been looking into Islam and Jihad for a decade with focus and deliberation but I still learned a good deal about Islam that I had not known prior to reading Gorka's book.

Dr. Price studied many populations throughout the world on a search for the root cause of good health. He found it. The Weston A Price Foundation (WAPF) was founded upon his principles of eating for health; not for convenience, not for the cheapest meal a person could find, but for something that truly matters - one's own health.If you have health issues, particularly chronic disease which is the result of chronic inflammation, it can often be reversed by eating according to Dr. Price's observations and recommendations. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, in salads and soups, or lightly steamed.7. Use whole grains and nuts that have been prepared by soaking, sprouting or sour leavening to neutralize phytic acid and other anti-nutrients.8. Include enzyme-enhanced lacto-fermented vegetables, fruits, beverages and condiments in your diet on a regular basis.9. Prepare homemade meat stocks from the bones of chicken, beef, lamb or fish and use liberally in soups and sauces.10. Use herb teas and coffee substitutes in moderation.11. Avoid artificial food additives, especially MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and aspartame, which are neurotoxins. Most soups, sauce and broth mixes and commercial condiments contain MSG, even if not so labeled. [make your own nutrient dense broth.]16. Avoid caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea and soft drinks. Avoid chocolate. [Decaf your own tea by first steeping loose tea in a mug of boiled water for 10-30 seconds and tossing that steep out, then re-steep as usual. For teabags, only 5-10 seconds is necessary.]17. Avoid aluminum-containing foods such as commercial salt, baking powder and antacids. Do not use aluminum cookware or aluminum-containing deodorants.18. Do not drink fluoridated water.19. Avoid synthetic vitamins and foods containing them.20. Do not drink distilled liquors.21. Do not use a microwave oven. [It changes food in ways that slow cooking does not.]The research and rationale for eating for health are in this book, but the guidelines are simple and easy. In 2005, I read a book that changed everything I thought I knew about nutrition - for all time; it is THE book of causative factors. This past week, 9 years later, I decided, prompted by some discussions online and here, to re-read it: "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration," by Weston A. Price. It's even more timely and prescient than ever. I was just as compelled then as now - more so, perhaps, after 10 years of reading and research of my own. I easily read 500 pages in 4 nights. Price was a dentist who graduated from the University of Michigan dental school in 1893. As he got into the first two decades of his practice in the 20th century, he became increasingly alarmed at people with bad teeth, poorly formed palates, cavities, and deformations of the jaw - and with that, serious health problems. He and his wife, beginning in 1929-30, traveled around the world to 14 different countries to find how the health, elsewhere, corresponded with mainly modern Americans. He visited isolated and respectively more modernized cultures in a Swiss village, Gaelics in the Islands of the Outer Hebrides, Eskimos, North American Indians, Melanesians, Polynesians, numerous African tribes, Australian Aborigines, Torres Strait Islanders, New Zealand Maori, and the Peruvian Indians. As well as studying the kept skulls of ancient Peruvians - nearly perfect palates and teeth.Bottom line: he investigated these peoples, who subsisted of their native "wild" foods - variably, meat, blood, butter, organ meats, milk, fish, rye, oats, some vegetables - and observed in them perfect dental arches, very rare tooth decay and cavities, and most of all, immunity to tuberculosis; their health, as well as their physiques, was found to be outstanding. However, in those groups, where certain segments obtained "modern foods of commerce" - white flour, sugar, jams, vegetable fats, canned goods - their health suffered, tuberculosis became rampant, as well as serious birth defects, cavities, deformed jaws, crooked teeth, and a host of other degenerative conditions. There are hundreds of photos throughout, and the difference between those who ate their native foods, and those who had manufactured foods, is truly, jaw-dropping shocking.Price documented his findings rigorously, thoroughly, with percentages and averages noted throughout. He also conducted numerous tests, curing several people of their health problems just by a change in food. The tests on vitamin A, D, butter, and minerals reveal some crucial findings and results. Animals with no vitamin A were born blind, or disfigured. There are several X-rays and photos that show the outcome of his tests. He notes conditions of soils, contents and values of whole grains, grasses and how they affect the final outcome - results of the consumption of the food in humans and animals.What it all boils down to is chemistry. The closer a food is to its natural origins and source, the better the health. The further away from its origins it is, processing, poor nutrients in growth cycles, denaturing, the worse the effect. In some of these cultures, no two young people were allowed to procreate unless they had undergone 6 months of concentrated nutrition to maximize the health of the conceived child. Price makes constant note of the "native wisdom" that had been passed down from generation to generation. He presents not just a few token cases but hundreds of them, across several thousands of miles - and it is startling how consistent the findings are from place to place.Though it was written in the 1930s, it is nonetheless eerily prophetic of the ominous trends that punctuate modern technology, namely the changing nature of how humans and animals eat. There is a "Twilight Zone" sense of foreboding as Dr. Price's research and findings unfold, chapter after chapter. What this book amounts to is a convincing, virtual warning on what is happening to the planet, to its food in all forms, and the humans and animals that inhabit it. I have no reservations about saying that this may be the most crucial piece of work on nutrition to ever have been written.This book is a spectacular read; I can't even begin to cover the astonishing breadth and scope of it. It is also controversial: a lot of quacks and grain and vegetarian fanatics have attacked this book, but, as it turns out, every one of Price's early findings are increasingly gaining merit as a lot of myths are being refuted.Though it does deal primarily with Dr. Price's research, findings and discoveries on nutrition and physical degeneration, there are so many rewards otherwise. This is a first-rate travelogue, superb cultural anthropological study, and an impressively thorough analysis of human behaviors. I bought this book on a recommendation from other civil engineers who passed the Civil PE, and I’m glad I purchased it. This book helped me pass on my first try. My method of studying for the PE exam was doing as many practice problems as I could get my hands on, and this book does a great job of presenting the material, and organizing it in a useful way. I found the CERM a bit overwhelming for learning concepts. This book is much easier to learn from, and uses notation that I am familiar with.I highly recommmend buying this book for the AM depth portion of the exam. I used this book the most during my studies, as well as on test day. I found it useful for the geotechnical depth as well. I only used the CERM for more obscure lookups on topics I’m not used to seeing on test day. I would also recommend buying Goswami’s practice exam book for additional problems to work on.

The book is helpful for about 20% of the morning AM exam and is completely useless for the PM exam. This book is outdated and full of errors.I took the author's review course, most of the time during the evenings, he seemed very tired and covered problems from his book. He also solved a number of past problems. I failed the April 2017 exams, but his course gave me the kickstart I needed after I've been out of class since 1994 when I completed my bachelor's degree, I owned up, he didn't fail me, I failed myself, plain and simple. When I told professor I failed, he never replied to me. I wondered what happened to... if you are unsuccessful in your attempt, you'll get the next program for free. He kept quiet and never said a word.I decided to take the exams again in October 2017, this time I said no more review course, I bought the SERM, read it and solve all the problems from front cover to the back cover. This time I passed. I told the professor, he just gave me a congrats with my name misspelled.To pass your PE, all you need is the latest CERM, and if your PM exam is Structures, then get the SERM as well plus your codes.

This book was well worth it and so much cheaper than the alternative. I used it from the beginning of my studies. I had a CERM borrowed from work and realized that was way too much and too confusing when I started studying. Granted I did put in a lot of studying hours mostly doing problems from Goswami's problem sets (which are much harder than the test), but I can say that this book is all I needed for the morning and afternoon geotech.I recommended this book to a few people and they all agree that's what they should have used the first time.Keep in mind though, that for Geotech, a lot of it is theory, concept and experience. So, if you're relying on this book to teach you that, you might be in trouble. You need to go back to your school notes, labs, field work etc... for a refresher on that.

I didn't find anything in this book to be better than the CERM (civil engineering reference manual). I ended up using some of the study guide from the same author though.Ryan's guide to passing the PE exam:Recommended resources: Civil PE exam secrets to review / teach concepts, CERM (i used a 4 year old edition, just get the most second most recent copy used unless you need code information for structural concentration), and as many editions of the official NCEES sample questions as possible. Do NOT use the huge practice problem book from the publisher of the CERM. It is a waste of your time.Print a copy of the official NCEES test description. Check off the concepts when you have reviewed them (i recommend the civil pe secrets book).After you have reviewed the concepts, start doing practice problems. Get quick at them. Bring these practice problems and your worked out solutions (bound) in to the test with you. Hands down the best prep for the PE exam. I know it sounds like an exaggeration let me explain why. The Lindberg book is the size of a phone book with a layout like an encyclopedia or a medical textbook. No engineering book follows such a convoluted format. Goswami's book is set following basic concepts to complex details. I was able to read the entire book cover to cover and get a sense of being able to understand all the subjects on the PE. The book includes some great practice problems that are only a little harder than the NCEES practice exam questions but easier than the horrible 6 Minute Solutions. The book has an easy to follow index and you are able to use this book much more efficiently than Lindberg. I have thoroughly compared the geotech section in Lindberg to Goswami's and for example; on the Shallow square foundations Lindberg gives you the the general formula with values to modify the equation for a square foundation. Goswami gives you the formula for a square foundation without confusing you no values to modify. Also Goswami gives you a table with more values for Phi instead of having you interpolate like Lindberg. There might be some complex detail lacking for the depth section of the PE. It would be impossible to include this in the book. Sort of what Lindberg tried to do and failed. So you still need advanced section references.The Lindberg book was really expensive. Honestly I could have done without it. Just buy Goswami's guide and get reference materials for the in depth section. Buy early edition reference books and the whole package should run you about 400 for geotech. Half if you got Lindbergs.Goswami also gives a great review class for the PE google his name. You study before hand from this book and ask him tough questions in a webminar. I talked to people that took school of PE and that class is basically for people that are unable to study. The school of PE class goes over formulas and theories. Don't waste your time studying in a class. Do it beforehand and troubleshoot hard questions with Goswami. Goswami is a Structural PE at Morgan State in Maryland. No other class has a PhD teaching it. Oh and did I mention Goswami's class is half of what school of PE charges and about 1/3 of what the Test café rip off charges.

Although the general details about the murders of two women in the middle of an early Spring night by an ax-wielding intruder are known in the region, a novel written by a well-known author has clouded the story to such an extent that even staid Yankees swear the fictionalized version is, in fact, the truth of the matter. A movie based on that novel quickly sank like an anchor, but it added to the messiness of the murder story, leading many people to believe an innocent man was convicted and executed while a cold-blooded murderess got away with it.The author has painstakingly researched this bloody crime, and has made every effort to present all he has learned in a fair, unbiased manner. When he expresses his own opinion, he does so clearly and with substantial backing. He carefully paints the scene, describing the typical lives of these hardscrabble fishing people, and through careful research gives brief histories of the region, the peoples (native and immigrant), the livelihoods. The reader feels embedded in this 19th century area, the pertinent towns of Portsmouth, N.H., Boston, Massachusetts, and Isles of Shoals, where the murders took place. By learning the history of the fishing industry with the subsequent decline of the fish, Robinson shows us the likely reasons for the murders, which probably were never intended but happened during the course of a burglary. The author brings together thousands of pieces of the puzzle as well as much careful research, and in the end we have a vivid idea of how and why the two women were murdered, why the one woman who managed to survive couldn't possibly have been the "secret" murderer as portrayed in the novel, and most importantly, we get a concise idea of what kind of man the murderer Louis Wagner really was. Robinson describes the meticulous way that Wagner throws out ever-changing stories to "prove" his supposed innocence, and shows why so many people even today, almost 150 years later, still think Wagner was indeed innocent."Mystery on the Isles of Shoals" proves that old crimes are just as fascinating as those from today.

This is a well researched book on the Smuttynose Island murders. The author is a well respected local historian who is clearly an expert in this field. My problem was that the book just seems disorganized and I had to force myself to keep reading. Nevertheless I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in true crime stories and/or New England history.

I am not terribly familiar with this event, though I do remember reading the Anita Shrieve fictional novel "Weight of Water"--I didn't even remember it was about the same crime when I purchased this eBook. That being said, I'm very glad I bought it! I purchased it yesterday and am already at Chapter 5 (without kids, sleeping, work, or Adult Responsibility, I'd totally still be reading it right now...). The writing is clear and engaging, and it appears the author is taking on conjecture and misinformation from various sources and knocking them down one by one while simultaneously discussing interesting information on the history of the area and life on the coast from the 1600s to the 1900s. His research is evident in every paragraph. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in true crime, life on the New England coast, or just generally want an engaging read on American history--you do certainly not need to be interested in all three of those things to find this book hard-to-put-down.

As a nation, we are deeply invested in the legend of successful immigration. It's a point of pride with us that people came from all over the world to settle in the U.S. They came for religious and political freedom or for greater economic opportunity. They made our nation stronger and carved out good lives for themselves and their families. We are proud to be a "nation of immigrants."There's truth in the legend, but it's not the whole truth. The reality is that most immigrants faced economic hardship and sometimes discrimination and persecution. Fear of immigrants (and the politicians who feed on it) is as old as our country. Sometimes it was just a matter of the New World being "over-sold." Immigrants wrote home with glowing tales of their easy lives and financial success. When their relatives joined them, the real situation was sometimes far different than they pictured. It was common for new immigrants (bewildered and not speaking English) to be ripped off by countrymen who had preceded them by a few years. The success stories were proudly repeated. The failures died quietly or crept back home in silence and disappointment.The middle of the 19th century saw waves of immigration from the Scandinavian countries. Many "Squareheads" were successful. Accustomed to harsh conditions in their cold, rocky homelands, they never expected an easy life or great wealth. They spread out across New England and on to the Great Plains, supported their families, and worked hard to achieve the American dream.In 1873, on tiny Smuttynose Island off Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the Hontvet/Christensen family fished for cod as they had in their native Norway. Three couples, united by blood and marriage, they shared a modest rented house on the isolated island. In a sense, their way of life was already doomed. Fishing was gradually giving way to the much more profitable tourism. Running a large resort hotel is hard work, but it pales beside the harshness and dangers of ocean fishing. But it was the trade that they knew and they managed to survive, if not thrive. The family members seem to have been compatible and their lives may have been slightly easier than in the Old World. The men fished and sold the fish; the women worked seasonally as maids in the island hotels.Then the three men had to be away overnight. During the night, the three women were attacked. Two died and one escaped. According to her story, which was consistent with the evidence, a former employee had rowed to the island and attacked them. His motivation (apparently) was his belief that there was $600 hidden in the house. He left with $16 and left behind the corpses of two young women who had been strangled and hacked to death with an ax.Years ago, I read another account of these murders (COLD WATER CROSSING: AN ACCOUNT OF THE MURDERS AT THE ISLES OF SHOALS) and it's a story that I've never forgotten. Robinson deals with the murders in greater depth, but comes to the same conclusions. I found it fascinating to re-visit this subject and see it through the eyes of another writer.This is one of the most celebrated (in the sense of being written and talked about) murders in New England history, but there are still so many questions left unanswered. I can understand the men failing to repair the broken lock on the house's door. Their lives as fishermen were ones of constant hard work, with little or no time for anything but what brought in a few more dollars. But why did the three women not barricade themselves in on a night when their men were absent? Indoor plumbing was not the norm at the time and there would have been an "outhouse" but few people then used the privy at night. The "chamberpot" under every bed was used at night and emptied in the morning.Built-in kitchen cabinets are a modern invention. Older kitchens had one or more "dressers" - huge, heavy pieces of furniture used for storing dishes, silverware, etc. One of those pulled across the door would have kept the intruder out long enough to give the women a fighting chance. He wasn't armed with a gun and these were three strong, healthy women who were accustomed to physical work. Only the fact that they were surprised in their sleep made them easy marks. Awake, they could have put up a good fight.Why was there so much mis-information about the murders? It was before the days when police departments and district attorney's offices carefully controlled the dissemination of "inside" information. It was also a time when every town had several newspapers and they fought for readers by trying to out-do each other in gristly, sensational stories. Truth was of secondary consideration. And, of course, the murder of two young women is a stunning event at any time. Still....Finally, why was there so much reluctance to accept the guilt of angry former-employee Louis Wagner? According to this author, the police did a thorough job of investigating the murders, given the primitive state of "forensics" at that time. Wagner was represented respectably. Was it that he was an attractive, charismatic man who captured the imagination of at least some of the public, who wanted to believe him innocent? He passionately maintained his innocence up to the time he was executed, but he had nothing to lose by doing so. A confession would have still meant the rope. Up until his execution, he could continue to tell his version of the "truth." The dead women were unable to speak and their family was too heart-broken and bewildered to speak for them.It's a fascinating story and I think the author tells it well. There's a LOT of detail, maybe too much for some readers, but I think you have to remember that he's dealing with a story that has been rehashed many times with (as frequently happens) lies and misinformation mixed in freely. He's trying to clear the record and he's pitting himself against other writers who have chosen to twist the story to suit their own purposes.Does it matter who killed Karen and Anethe and tried to kill Maren? I think the truth ALWAYS matters and so does this writer. This is not a quick read, but it takes the reader back in time in a very convincing way. If you're interested in American social history, this book is worth your time.

Interesting but reads more like a high school history project than a PhD thesis. A lot of repetition. This book would've served better as a well-developed but much shorter magazine piece.

This activity book is livening our history program and it saves so much research and time. I like the recipes and crafts that she describes and I can not wait to do more of them with my daughter. So far she has eaten like a barbarian, made a Roman battle signum , built an edible roman building out of cookies and tore it apart like the barbarians did. I highly recommend this book. It will require some imagination, craft supplies, and messiness, but it is worth it and Susan Wise Bauer makes it easy by sharing her ideas, maps, and coloring pages.

My son and I love this way to do homeschool history. It's almost story form and very easy to follow. He is in 9th grade so we are flying through it, but it's so interesting to both of us. What a great overview of history from the beginning. (If you start with book one) This activity book has great maps and discussion questions that we use. There are many lists of resources to use with the lessons, as well as activities to draw, etc.

I love this book. It has helped a lot for our history. My son is a very hands on person, so this book has help tremendously in this area. What we do is read a section of the book. Then I have him copy the narration ideas. After that we read one of the books that are suggested for further study. If there is a color page or activity that pertains to the lesson for that day we will also do this. I am using this for our history curriculum exclusively since everything is written out for us and all I have to do is copy a worksheet page or order a book from the library.

Not until I was homeschooling our precious three did I realize how interesting history really is. We loved all of The Story of the World books and used the Activity books tremendously. I am not very creative and relied heavily on the suggestions put forth in the book. Now I teach at a middle school and find myself turning again to these wonderful books to supplement our own dry textbooks.

I purchased the Activity Two Book because my son enjoyed the Activity One Book. This book is appropriate for Grades 1 through 4 and should be purchased "together" with The Story of the World Volume 2: The Middle Ages book. The activity book can be used in families with different-aged children. Each chapter includes a narration exercise, question and answer for oral and written review, cut-outs, coloring, maps, craft projects as well as a thorough list of suggested readings. There is something for everyone here to make learning history an enjoyable experience.

We love this book! It has everything I could ask for in activities for our history studies (except someone else to teach it!) My daughter loves to do the map work and make crafts that correspond with her lessons!

Although it added to the page length, which may at first seem a bit intimidating, it is really just from the graphics and listing each process by itself. For example, it might be that to make an ad with a single image and to make a video ad start out the same way but the author has gone through each process from start to finish so you don’t need to dig for the information. This makes me feel more comfortable with trying to do a certain type of advertising and more confident that I can accomplish it. I love the resources that are included in the manual as well, especially the links to help from Facebook because I have spent hours in the past trying to find information to contact Facebook and just running in circles. There are also plenty of other outside sources to help you stay up to date in the field if you try to manage your account alone as well as a resource for you to arrange for a consultation from the author’s business which does these types of ads. The only really confusing part of the book for me was in the beginning. Chapter two was almost Japanese to me as it started explaining terms with no reference for where or how I was going to use them. I felt like this just should have been included in the glossary in the back of the book and the author could have used more context to explain those terms. I’m still not entirely sure about pixels although the were explained in context later in the book and helped me to clarify why they were so important as well as how to make them and install them, but after chapter two and until the later material I just wasn’t sure what it was all about. In the end, however, it was explained quite well.
