Purchased these for my grandson and he loves them. I started him off with the 1st book and the next 4 so that he'd have some to read over the Christmas holidays last year. I got him the next 5 in the series for his birthday in March. The next 3 were purchased for him to read over the summer. I will be buying the next 5 in the series as part of his Christmas presents. I love that he reads (he's in 2nd grade) and his mom said these are first books he stays glued to when he starts one. I was rather disappointed with the book. I had expected more details on each river's rapids. I first flipped to the section on Cache Creek, a river I had been on, and found only a couple of rapids mentioned. Nor were there any tips on how to run the couple that were mentioned. Same thing with the section on the Trinity River. I had hoped to find a book that would guide me through each rapid and this book didn't deliver. If I had bought this book in a book store I probably would have returned it but since I bought it online the initial postage coupled with the return postage wasn't worth it. When we buy on the internet there is always a chance that you won't get what you expected and this was a perfect example.I will say that the info that was included in the book was very good and the book was arragned nicely. It does give a fairly good overall view of each river, just not enough detailed info.

Seems like some of the runs may be labeled more difficult than they are since it was written awhile ago

I have found this book a valuable resource for anyone planning to run rivers in CA. Although I am focusing on the Upper/Lower Kern River...the book provides specifics of different water-craft running sections of rivers, logistics, and most importantly...details on the section run. It outlines most of the major rapids and what to look for (keepers, boulders, other fun objects). However, it does NOT subsititue for scouting the rapids!! Additionally, although I truly love the format, detailed information, and humerous descriptions of trips, some rapids are left out and are not even shown on the maps...so know the rivers in addition to reading this great resource!

Whatever your ability or source of flotation, this guide book will enhance your river running experience. Each river stretch is rated for difficulty, suitability to different kinds of boats, recommended water levels, permits required, managing agencies, scenery, solitude, camp sites, etc., and the mile-by-mile guide rates the difficulty of each major rapid including notes on how to run them and when to portage, river access, etc. The book is very well indexed, including a special index of easy whitewater to help newcomers find forgiving waterways on which to practice their boating skills.

Poor reproductions. Why? The book is printed on cream paper instead of clear white. When the color images are printed, they become less distinct and the colors are less vibrant because the photography takes in the color of the original art paper. When you add the color of the naturally aged paper of the original artwork and add it to cream paper, you get cream x2. A good book designer would know this, but this one trying to make a cute souvenir book and shame on the Tate for accepting it.It took MONTHS for the seller to ship. Not kidding. Too much trouble to return. Poorly packed when it was sent.Oh, if you doubt the review and you order the book anyway, compare the printed illustration on the front to anything inside. The difference in clarity is astounding. A poor tribute to a great painter. I will say this though; I get a kick out of the recto pages being printed. It is, after all, supposed to be a true representation of the sketchbooks and printing both sides is currently an accepted practice. To do that and yet fail at the most important goal is a total waste of paper, time and my money.

This is a super little book. It feels a bit like you are looking at Turner's own sketchbook (I found myself turning the pages carefully, so strong is my imagination!). It is a treat to see his thought process, and his hand in these little sketches. The warm paper does overwhelm some of the images. I am not sure if he would have used such yellow paper back then, or if this is trying to replicate an aged sketchbook.

Elegant, expressive simplicity... Love Turner's watercolors, love this book.

Buyer beware - this book is a disappointment. The majority of images are poor with only a few that are fair at best. Perhaps this is because of fading with the originals. In any event both front and back of the originals are included. What significance a blank back page has to do with demonstrating Turner's record of skies, in beyond me. It seems more like a poor excuse for filler.

The previous reviewers seemed to have been surprised by what they received in this book - so let me clarify: this is a full facsimile of one of Turner's most storied sketchbooks. That means every page, every surface in it, from the front cover to the back cover, and every page, both front and back in between, is reproduced. I first picked this up in the gift shop at the Frick after viewing the exhibition on Turner's port paintings and was instantly entranced by his effortless capture of so many nuances in the sky. This sketchbook is a reminder that you can locate wonder anywhere, if you only stop to look for it. Turner never stopped looking for it, and he was able to show it to the rest of us who spend too much time with our heads down. When he was done he had worked his way through a sketchbook he flipped it upside down and started working from the back to the front, so as to get the most out of the paper. That's why there are drawings upside down in the back half of the book.I"m sorry to see the clear disappointment in the first two reviews. This book deserves a wider audience. But you will appreciate it most if you understand what you are opening yourself up to.
