This book is a classic in its own right. Brunton was a Western writer and materialistic to begin. But he travels about in India, interviewing yogis (who are hard to reach). He writes about different traditions of yoga. He is most impressed by Ramana Maharshi. (Ramana is not really a yogi.) He interviews an astrologer who describes ancient Tibetan astrology, etc. This is a book that can be read over and over. Unfortunately Christians would not benefit much, unless they want to grow spiritually.Brunton also co-authored "Conscious Immortality", which includes much of Ramana Maharshi's teachings.

Throughout my spiritual quest, almost all the spiritual books I've read "came" to me at precise the right time. As the Buddha's saying goes "when the student is ready the teacher will appear. I still don't know how I came across this jewel, but all I can say is "what an amazing teacher"! Written in 1935. Thank you Paul Brunton you made me experience the India I dream about. Thank you for introducing me to Sri Ramana Maharshi. This book is not one that will be saved in one of the Kindle's folders, this is a book one needs to return to again and again, especially the last chapter: Tablets of forgotten truth.

As one who has read many spiritual books and is a follower of Paramhansa Yogananda, I was thrilled in reading PB's book on India. I was most impressed by his encounters with holy men who could perform wondrous feats. Most people from the west think that so-called miracles stopped with Jesus. I was captivated reading his accounts of meeting and interacting with the true holy men of India. His dealings with the phony conjurers was interesting and showed how relentless he had to be to find true saints. His written experiences were fully convincing and reflect just how much we have to learn about our abilities to move beyond the physical world we think is our only realm of operation. I recommend this book for anyone seeking a path to self-realization. It was a great read and very helpful to me.

A wonderful book merging travel, spiritual seeking, yoga, India, history and interesting personalities. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this from the point of view of a yoga teacher. I am old enough to find the prose easy and natural tho a bit formal, and it was such a joy to steep in Paul Brunton's style of searching and writing. A valuable testimony, and as pertinent today as ever. Highly recommend.

I came to this book after discovering Ramana Maharshi. Mr. Brunton does an excellent job of recounting his adventure to India. He also does an really good job of capturing the essence of the message which Ramana consistently delivered to any who had the good fortune to converse or encounter him. I am forever grateful to Mr. Brunton for detailing his adventure in India and for introducing us to the teachings of Ramana Maharshi!

It is a first hand experience of the quest for the hidden teachings of the sages in India. Paul Brunton's descriptive abilities are amazing in this regards.

This wonderful story, at first seeming so archaic, stuffy, arrogant, western . . . is more and more and more wonderful and then done. Naturally enough it belongs with available works of the great saint Ramana Maharshi. It does not seem possible that Maharshi is not still there to go and visit at Arunachala. Yet, it has been more than sixty years ago. Impossible and meaningless, that time. For new readers, the kindle version is without Brunton 's photos, so far as I can tell.

Read it, learn and use. Devoid of hocus pocus. I want to read more of Brunton. Was apparently a major influence on Carl Jung, though never given credit by Jung.

Walker tells the story of Harry Colebourn, a World War I soldier who came upon a man selling a baby bear at a train station (he had shot the cub's mother) and decided to adopt the animal. A veterinarian, Colebourn quickly became attached to the little bear he named Winnie (short for Winnipeg, Manitoba, Colebourn's company's hometown), who accompanied the soldier to a training camp in Quebec and became a favorite of the entire regiment. Winnie even went with the company to England when more soldiers were needed across the Atlantic. When Colebourn was sent into battle, he took Winnie to the London Zoo, where she was so gentle and tame that zookeepers sometimes let children ride on her back. There, Milne's young son, Christopher Robin, met her and fell in love, motivating Milne to pen the "Winnie-the-Pooh" books. Sweet, realistic illustrations, rendered in watercolor with pen and ink, lend the work an old-fashioned air, while a simple but gentle narrative provides readers with a sense of the emotional connection between Winnie and Colebourn. As a substitute teacher, I carry the book in my school bog to read to students when there is "gap" time. The first time I read it was to 2nd graders. When I finished reading, I asked them if they liked it. All nodded but one shook her head and said, "I didn't like it: I loved it!" Third graders, 1st grade students, even fifth graders were delighted. High praise.Great way to tie fiction and non-fiction together and throw in some geography and history, too.

While this book was ok, be sure to order the award-winning version of the story which is so beautifully and poignantly told! It's "Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear," by Lindsay Mattick. It's head and shoulders above this one. The story is told subtly and unfolds in a way that provides an element of surprise and awe. It is also told by family members of one of the principle characters, Harry Colebourn. Don't miss it!

I love the illustrations in this book, as well as the story behind Winnie-the-Pooh. My grandsons enjoy this book, the story, and the illustrations. It also includes some fascinating historical photos.

Love, love, love the story, the illustrations, and the whole idea that the story is based on truth! The end pages have prints of the real "Winnie" bear and Christopher Robin--very cool stuff.

Touchingly and beautifully illustrated and written, "Winnie" shows the bonds between animals and humans, in the form of a baby bear who responded with love to the solider who rescued her and to the regiment whose mascot she became. A legend from her days at the London Zoo, Winnie never forgot "her" soldier, who made certain she enjoyed a happy, safe life. Children and adults alike will love this book.

My 7 year son and I both really enjoyed this book. We both learned new things about Winnie-the-pooh. Easy to read, informative, and the art work was great. Pictures of Winnipeg, the real Christopher Robins, etc were a great addition. I highly recommend this book!

Another version of the Winnie the Pooh true story of the soldier who cared for this bear cub. I have read it twice and love the story. Can't wait to continue to share with my Grand children

I was so confident I would love it that I purchased copies for all the women on my Christmas list before I'd even received my copy in the mail!I was so excited when I received my copy in the mail. After reading all the great insights in her blog I knew it was going to be great. But something about the book surprised me. I brought the book with me one Friday afternoon to the church while I waited for my oldest son to go through his primary program practice. I figured it would be a good time to sit and read through some of the book. As I sat in the foyer with my book, my three-year old son came over and asked me to read it to him. At first I sort of put him off, this wasn’t really a “kids” book, but he insisted. So he plopped down on my lap and I let him point to a name in the table of contents. I figured he would sit with me for a few sentences and then run off to go play in the nursery.He chose “The Widow Who Gave Two Mites”. We turned to that story and I gave him a simplified version of the story first and then started reading to him what was in the book. I hadn’t wanted the book for the pictures but the beautiful artwork convinced my little boy that this book was for him too. Instead of a “kids” book that might have given him a very superficial understanding of this story, he sat and listened to some pretty meaty insights about how Jesus brought his message to both men and women, and how we should give up all to serve Him, and that He sees and knows our needs even when we feel insignificant. Wow. I’ve read this story many times before and I’d always thought it was meaningful, but I had never gotten all of that out of it! I sat in the foyer with tears in my eyes from just the experience of that one story. But more importantly, my son sat there and listened to it, and was eating it all up. I expected that this book would give me some good insights but I hadn’t imagined that at such a young age it would be influencing my young son. This truly isn’t a book about women just for women, it is a message about some of the sometimes overlooked players within the scriptures with a message for everyone.I haven’t yet read all of the stories, but I have been thoroughly enjoying reading them one at a time and really savoring the deeper messages of stories that I’d never thought much of, or hadn’t even noticed. I used to think that there should be more women in the scriptures so that I could learn from their stories as they would be more relatable to myself as a woman. I was so excited when Heather announced that she was going to write a book. I have been a long time reader of her blog and I love the way she presents the women. Heather does her research, she lists where you can find the women, and things about the culture of the time. I love that she ends each post with questions to ponder. Heather invites us to join her in learning from the women. I also have loved that Heather presents each woman in a neutral voice. You can tell she loves them, but she wants you to learn and make up your mind about the women.When I got the book, I was delighted. It was beautiful and each page's lay out was easy to read. I loved the pictures to illustrate each woman. I also appreciate that they are mostly dark haired and dark eyed, as they would have been. The book has tables and reads very informatively. I also love Heather's insights to a possible lesson that we can learn from each woman. She relates the women to her life and our day. I look forward to studying from this book, I will find more things to learn as I reread and search the scriptures.

Heather does such a great job at bringing these women to life. I love how she takes women who are mentioned briefly and sometimes not even by name, and expands their story. She give it historical and cultural context. She makes their lives relevant for women today. I empathize with them, and feel that even though are worlds are thousands of years apart, I can understand a little of how they must of felt and the reasons behind the choices they make. It's empowering and inspirational.Plus I love the original artwork. It's a great mix of historical and relevant.This is a gem that everyone, especially women, should have in their libraries.

I loved this well written walk thru the New Testament stories of women filled in with historical and cultural details of the time they lived in. If everything might not be absolutely true because we don't have the women's personal first hand accounts, what is written is true to their time period and historical facts surrounding them. Learning how their culture used words and what they meant rather than assuming they meant what we mean in our times was illuminating. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I was so excited to have finally purchased this book. I have already been reading and following Heather Ferrell's blog for several years and the book is more than I could have imagined. Beautiful artwork paired with the inspiring written messages is a perfect gift for yourself or a friend.

I enjoyed this book. Having read the author's blog for some time, I was excited to see it come out, and pre-ordered my copy so I could get it as soon as possible. I like that it focuses on women in the scriptures without being antagonistic or stereotypically "feminist," in the negative sense. Well-researched, and easy to read, I would recommend it. The illustrations are just stunning as well! Adds to the pleasure of reading the book.

I follow the author's blog & when I read the post about her new book release I know it would be one I would want to add to my book collection. Everything is so well researched, well written & well easy to follow. It is helping me love the New Testament more & understand it better. I love this book & know it's one I will come back to again & again as I re-read the stories of these women.

This is an incredible book! I love it and have read it many times. I love that she has included ALL the women of the New Testament....many of whom I had never heard before and can find little to no information about elsewhere. And I especially love Heather's insight on the doctrine exemplified by these amazing women as well as the connections she makes to my life. She makes these women both known and relevant in today's world and in my life. They are now my friends and I love to "walk" with them as I learn from Heather's discerning, sagacious wisdom.

We use Rough Guides for all our trips, along with Michelin Green Guides. No Michelin available for these countries, though. Rough Guides are the best for young people and those traveling by public transport. We'll have a rental car, but like to go to out-of-the-way sights, which are well covered. Would like a new edition, as Latvia & Lithuania are now using the Euro; this book has prices in the old currencies. I expect a new edition will be printed, just after our trip.

I bought this primary for the maps. I love the way they are presented. Good information here.

This review is of the latest revision of this book published in 2011. It is bang up to date, for example, in Estonia all prices are shown in Euros which reflects Estonia adopting the Euro shortly before publication.The book adopts the normal format of rough guides, giving the general background and overview of each country, including travel to and around each country, major events and festivals, outdoor activities, accommodation, food and travel essentials comprising topics such as safety, visa requirements, health, insurance etc.We visited Tallinn, capital of Estonia and so had the opportunity to assess the accuracy and usefulness of the information given for that city. Generally the main sights of the Old Town were summarised, though I did think that the information given was somewhat brief and as it is a very interesting area, could have included more to look out for - we saw a number of things we would have liked to know more about which were not mentioned. The listings of hotels and restaurants appeared to be up to date as far as I could assess. Generally, however, we use rough guides to find out what we should be looking at rather than for an assessment of accommodation etc. Tripadvisor and similar resources are fine for the latter, and as this is not a particular lengthy book I would have thought there was scope for the sightseeing aspect to be more comprehensive.Unfortunately we did pick up an inaccuracy in the map of the central area which showed two Cathedrals of St Mary the Virgin which was quite confusing. We eventually worked out that the northern most one was, in fact, the Convent of St Michael which, whilst being very worthy of a visit with a fairly incredible illustrated screen in front of the alter, was not mentioned in the book at all. In the 3rd Edition of this book I would have expected this sort of inaccuracy to have been ironed out unless this is a gremlin which has just crept into the latest version but I am mindful that the budget given to the unfortunate editor to do an update is not generous and hence new editions tend to be titivations of previous versions rather than a proper root and branch job.So a reasonably adequate general guide of the Baltic republics, but if you are visiting a particular area as opposed to travelling about, you may consider investing in a more specific and comprehensive guide to that particular city or area which is what we should have done in advance of our visit to Tallinn.

This guide up to this year was titled The Rough Guide to The Baltic States, which of course was highly offensive and ignorant to the people who live in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Calling these countries Baltic States is pretty much the only time, these extremely friendly people will start to get a bit narky, and understandably so when it refers to their previous terrifying years of being occupied by the Soviets and the torture, genocide and misery associated with that. All of these countries have been independent for at least 10 years now and really don't need to be insulted by that kind of ignorance. When I was there last year and backpackers carrying the old covered books would pull them out to ask for directions while buying lunch or something you just cringed as you could see the insult on the faces of the locals. So at least The Rough Guide has changed the cover (although putting an old brothel scene is probably pretty offensive too). However even with the new brothel cover, you open the book to the first section Basics - Getting There and the first line shows the editors still haven't learnt a thing, with "From the UK and Ireland the most convenient way of getting to the Baltic States is to fly". The fact that they aren't aware of how taboo referring the Baltic Countries as Baltic States is, which is equivalent, well actually a lot worse to calling Canadians Americans, New Zealanders Australians, or Irish people British, does make you question just how many years ago did the writers actually go to these three countries. And therefore, how current and relevant is the information inside.The information inside is a bit more current then the pre Berlin Wall coming down years, there's places to eat, places to stay but like all these sorts of guides, there's a heap more better places than listed inside. If you can't come across any other guide for this region, this book would be helpful in planning your trip and working out just which towns and national parks you want to visit. I would however get a copy of Lonely Planet Estonia Latvia & Lithuania (Multi Country Guide) instead as it does have a bit more information, and even though the latest was published in 2009, I don't really notice much more uptodate stuff in this Rough Guide. The Lonely planet guide also has chapters on Helsinki Finland, which is a short ferry ride from Tallinn, and Kallingrad Russia, which is also an easy day trip from Klaipeda. I didn't go to Kallingrad but found the Helsinki chapters very useful when I went to these countries in 2010.The maps of the towns and cities are pretty much on par with Lonely Planet's. I wouldn't rely on either guidebook for hostel bookings, I'd go to Hostelling International, BUG and Hostelworld and other hostel booking websites to choose, read reviews by previous travellers and book your hostels before arriving.If you're thinking of going to these countries but don't know if you should, definitely do so. The people are some of the best and most friendly locals you will ever meet. There's heaps of great towns to visit in each country but if asked to name two must see destinations in each country my recommendations of the best places are, in Latvia Riga with its great parks, old town and people. As well as the small town of Kuldiga with Latvia's widest waterfall next to a nice relaxing old town.In Estonia you have to see Tallinn, especially it's medieval old town area, where again like Riga, the local people are so friendly. As is the picturesque southern town of Viljandi which is pretty much the only place the trains from Tallinn go. Viljandi has great castle ruins, a nice lake and is again just a really nice relaxing small town. Note you can't catch a train from Riga to Tallinn, you'll be bussing it on Eurolines or a more expensive company.In Lithuania you have to visit Juodakrante and the numerous highly detailed wooden witch, goblin and other creatures huge wooden monuments in the hills behind the Curonian Spit town (you can do it as a day trip from Klaipeda but there's nothing much to see in Klaipeda). Kanaus is the best of the Lithuanian big cities, much better than the overrated Vilnius.
