About the Author

August Wilson was a major American playwright whose work has been consistently acclaimed as among the finest of the American theater. His first play,Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for best new play of 1984-85. His second play, Fences, won numerous awards for best play of the year, 1987, including the Tony Award, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. Joe Turner's Come and Gone, his third play, was voted best play of 1987-1988 by the New York Drama Critics' Circle. In 1990, Wilson was awarded his second Pulitzer Prize for The Piano Lesson. He died in 2005.

_Two Trains Running_ is the August Wilson "Century Series" play depicting the African-American experience in the 1960s. In a 1969 Pittsburgh diner, 6 men and a woman share vignettes about their lives and the "American Dream." Memphis, the owner of the diner, is about to have the city seize the restaurant under "immenent domain." Sterling, (who will play a significant role in Radio Golf) has just been released from prison and is enamored with the Black Power movement. West, the community's mortitian and Wolf, a number runner, are the wealthiest men in the Hill District. As these characters relate their lives, Wilson shows how the American Dream has been promised, and for so many, been denied.Memphis is frustrated and angry: he was run off his farm in Mississippi (with an allusion to The Piano Lesson (The August Wilson Century Cycle)), and now faces being run off of his business in Pittsburgh. Hambone, a homless (and possibly mentally ill) customer has similarly been cheated. Reflecting on the American Dream, Halloway says, "People kill me talking about (African-Americans) is lazy. (African-Americans) is the most hardworking people in the world. Worked three hundered years for free. And didn't take no lunch hour. Now all of a sudden (African-Americans) is lazy. Don't know how to work. All of a sudden when they got to pay (African-Americans), ain't no work for him to do."Wilson, however, asks us to consider whether the "American Dream" is merely about making money - both Wolf and West have made their money by exploiting and taking advantage of others, seeking to pull themselves up at the expense of their community. Sterling pays a visit to Mama Esther at 1839 Wylie (an allusion to Gem of the Ocean, where Mama Esther will "make you right") and is indeed made right, forgoing money in favor of love. This is reiterated by Holloway who tells the audience, "That's all you got. You got love and you got death. Death will find you ... it's up to you to find love. That's where most people fall down at. Death got room for everybody. Love pick and choose. ... most people won't admit that. ... Love got a price to it. Everybody don't want to pay. They put it on credit. Time it come due they got it on credit somewhere else."I was profoundly moved by _Two Trains Running_ - a reference to the fact that in life, there are always choices, always two trains running in different directions. Wilson, as with his other plays, poses profound questions about who we are as a nation, about the African-American experience, and that experience in the broader context of being an American. Here, however, he asks us to reconsider what choices we've made and what our values as individuals are. As if his other work hadn't already made him an American classic, _Two Trains Running_ certainly would. As with his other work, if you have an opportunity to see it performed, do not miss it.

August Wilson proved that genius is never complicated, always simple and clear, and hugely enjoyable. His characters are always alive and their speech poetic. The ending could not be better. He was a poet writing plays. I loved the man. What a shame he did not love to write more! Great loss!

I like the flow of the characters and the storyline.

I was going to Ashland to see this play and wanted to read it first. It's not my "cup of tea". The after-play discussion was fabulous at decoding the nuances of this play.

This is a well-written drama. I love Wilson's effortless use of colorful colloquial ebonics.

I really liked it.

I have read 3 of his plays and I'm excited about his works.

I can't say enough about these books. They are sturdy, just the right size and much like reading your old comic books.

Nothing beats these classic Comics by Carl Barks. His work is phenomenal for anything Donald Duck. Highly recommend!

I grew up with peanut butter stains on my large kitchen table Carl Barks (hardback) edition. What I did not realize was that this WONDERFUL collection had in some degree of racism. I would be attentive is sharing this with children to point out that MEXICANS do not all talk funny, look terrible and sleep most of the day. I would also question a few other things ... BUT I WOULD NOT STOP SHARING TO THE NEXT GENERATION the cartoons; ...

Through several guided passages and decrees, the guides give us the language and the experience of aligning to our Divine Self, so that we no longer are operating as our small self. But instead as our True Selves, "healing the world" through our very emanation and perception of the divine in all. I finished the book with the feeling tone of loving my self as I am without having to do a damn thing. And for me, that is quite unusual. And it feels amazing, frankly.I'm a lover of words, and this experience was like being told the most beautiful, soothing, feel-the-truth-in-my-bones story by divine parents sitting at my bedside.If you identify with being highly intuitive or empathic, you may very well have a visceral experience reading this text. But some of you say "I just want to pay the bills." "I don't want to be so sad, or so frightened." Understand these words friends. The divine self as you is never frightened, because she does not align to fear. The divine self as you has the witness that you seek to live your landscape. And the divine as you who knows her name, I am here, I am here, I am here, is the one who has come to claim the kingdom. The kingdom as we teach it, is the awareness of the divine in all manifestation."I realized that I wasn't applying truth to my life in this way and I was really drawn to read the Book of Mastery and I'm so thankful that I read it. These teachings are truly wonderful, I can state this first hand since applying them in my life. The results began manifesting straight away, you can't ask for more than that. It may not be comfortable at times either, but facing fear isn't.I found the energy these words emit is palpable, I really resonated very strongly with it, and I loved that experience. The Guides say they are with you in support every step of the way, and I found that be true. Once you connect to the Divinity within it is an unstoppable force and the fear subsides more and more. To me this is the path to total freedom.The other thing I love about these teachings is that it is about raising the vibration of the whole planet, NOT just the self.I absolutely loved this book, it is funny at times, direct and to the point and it gives you the tools to have a completely new experience of life.Thank you to Paul Selig for the work you do, it is wonderful.

** I updated my original 2016 book review after a 2nd reading of the Book of Mastery in March 2017.The Book of Mastery is the 4th channeled book from Paul Selig. His non-physical guides sometimes refer to themselves as “Melchizedek” and seem to teach what I would point to as “the Christ spirit”. This is the first Paul Selig book that I have ever read, HOWEVER I did not find starting with the 4th book to be a barrier. So, not all readers have to read the first 3 books before reading the Book of Mastery (some may).I do admit that this book is often "energetically" difficult to read and process. It is a book where you have to take it a meal at a time – not over indulging. I did not experience the “language of the book cloaked” as one reviewer stated. The messages came through clearly and cohesively, however energetically, this book did require added processing (for me). Paul's guides suggest that there is 'coding in the words' they present. When I did perceive or experience my resistance, my simple solution was to stop reading till the next day, go back and re-read what I had highlighted the day before, and then start fresh with the next section or chapter. This worked. While reading the book, I did experience Paul’s guides working with me energetically (as they suggested in the book).Paul's guides use the metaphor of “climbing a mountain” for their instruction of approximately 26 days, and sometimes it felt like climbing as I read the book. The primary focus of this book is “alignment with the Divine self” (e.g., much like Abraham-Hicks alignment with Source). Paul’s guide’s articulations about fear, truth and the shared experience on this plane are instructive. Overall, these topics alone are worth the price of the book for most readers.One thing I initially found disruptive while reading was that Paul’s guides appeared a bit rough with him at times (e.g., my own guides often have light-hearted fun with me). While I have been corrected by my guidance, Selig seems consistently corrected by his guides. To understand this dynamic, Selig is not trance channeling. He is repeating the words while consciously remaining in his body (e.g., he is fully present). Paul is ALSO present as a student for the teaching, as he channels content for the first time. Therefore, when Paul has a question about what his guides just stated, the guides know about Paul's dissonance and immediately interrupt the message to readers to address Paul’s energy directly. This is part of the agreement that Paul has with his guides, when recording the message for each published book. And while I appreciate this transparency in their relationship, this dynamic was sometimes distracting as a human reader. It required additional focus on my part.Regarding comparisons to other channels, another reviewer here made some negative comments comparing this book to Abraham-Hicks teachings without actually completing the book (e.g., they were not attracted ... which is perfectly OK). I follow Abraham-Hicks myself, and I have completed this book twice. If there is a difference between the teachings, I would suggest that it is primarily the human interpreters (Paul Selig and Esther Hicks). While Melchizedek uses different words and emphasized a specific teaching (e.g., not Law of Attraction), I also found that they validated several points I have heard from Abraham about the divine self (what Abraham calls “inner being”), vibration, knowing and alignment (Abraham calls “being in the vortex”). So ... I frequently found the two teachings complimentary, but using different words. And, if I did experience a difference in emphasis within the two teachings, it is that Abraham emphasizes explicitly a relationship with our non-physical guidance. In some contrast, in the marketing of the 2nd book in this series, what appears immediately explicit is that ‘Paul has non-physical guides’. However, the publisher's message that the ‘students of the guides’ have their own non-physical guidance appears to be implicit. I currently find this imbalance a shortcoming in the marketing of the book series. Therefore, I have stopped reading this particular book series to focus on things that I am more attracted to and/or resonate with.Overall, I give the Book of Mastery four and a half stars. My two journeys (first in 2016 and again in March 2017) with Paul's guides required human effort and added personal focus (each time). Paul Selig gets 5 stars. He knows how he serves. Paul is not only gifted, but generous and humble from my own experiences listening to him. HOWEVER, I am giving the presented book content and its surrounding information 4 stars for two reasons. First, many of the lessons of this book are taught elsewhere. Second, the marketing messages associated with this book series are no longer attractive to me. Again, in the marketing of the book series, it is made explicit that Paul has guides but it is not equally clear (up front) that you and I have non-physical guidance. Each of us has non-physical guidance which we extend from! We are no different than Paul Selig (or Jesus for that matter) in this aspect of our non-physical / physical creation.

National Geographic is really blowing it with their maps, and this New Zealand map is a perfect example. The size if the paper the map is printed on easily allows for a larger scale map with much more detail. But NG wastes so much space with scenery photos- yes, scenery photos- that they have to shrink the scale down to 1:1,100,000. This map doesn't have enough detail even to plan with, much less drive. Mindbogglingly stupid.

This map was available for $5 US. I know the NZ visitor centers all carry maps for the North or South island and each specific region, but I wanted a map to help plan before leaving. With the Nov 2016 earthquake, it's also important to remember to keep current with all road information available online. Plan to use GPS when you travel along with a map for general information and you'll be fine.

We bombed around the South Island for three weeks using only this map and never got lost. The only complaint I have is that we encountered several places where the map showed campsites that didn't exist (after searching high and low and checking with locals). The substrate is soft, waterproof, and always easy to return to a folded position. This was a nice change from a lot of maps that seem impossible to get back to the correct folded position. I even abused the map a lot by folding it in odd ways to show only the area in which I was travelling--but the map always bounced back from all of that abuse.

With the North Island on one side and the South Island on the other, it has plenty of detail for those planning a road trip in New Zealand. The scale is 1 inch to 17 miles (1:1,100,000). Lakes, rivers, and mountains, and contour lines are printed on the map in addition to the roads, towns and cities. It's easy to read, and is printed on a really tough material that can handle a lot of folding and unfolding. There are no inset maps detailing any of the cities, but this a great map for getting the big picture. Nice job, National Geographic!

Very nice piece of work. Going to use (offline) Google Maps for navigation, but as far as a backup or getting a "bird's eye" view, this does the trick. Also a beautiful piece of work if you are thinking about framing, although be aware that the South and North Islands are on reverse sides, so if you want to frame a map of NZ that shows the whole country, then this is not the map - unless you buy two!

This is the best road map we found of New Zealand. It has the North island on one side and the South on the reverse. Many of NZ's best attractions are marked on it. The index is pretty complete. Probably the best feature is the plastic coating--thin enough to allow easy folding, tough enough that in 2 weeks of constant use it never tore. I omitted the fifth star because this map does not have distances between towns printed alongside the highways.

This map is clear and easy to read, a good tool to help plan a trip and good to have as back-up when my GPS fails. It's also a sturdy map that will withstand the typical abuse of folding different ways and the spills from drinks and food while travelling.

These maps are water and tear proof, perfect for a trip that includes quite a bit of adventuring. North Island is on one side, and South on the other. Totally agree with the other reviewer that said to use these in conjunction with the NZ frenzy guidebooks to mark up your route- great idea! Love being able to mark them up with a sharpie without having them bleed through.

I first read Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch in my early twenties, soon after moving to California from the East Coast. During that first reading, I came to know a Henry Miller I'd never known from his fiction; I was impressed, and inspired. I also met a lot of people that I'd never heard of previously (can you imagine, never having heard of Robinson Jeffers? An east coast woman of 21 years had not!). It was a great read at that time. Many years later (I'm not going to say how many), I've decided to reread it. Once again, I am enjoying this book, and I'm discovering new things (or perhaps rediscovering things I'd forgotten) this time around.It's a ramble, however. There is no plot, there is no consistent train of thought, and there is nothing essentially sensational about it. If you're looking for the Henry Miller of the "Tropics," or any of his other fictional writings, don't look here. This book is broadly philosophical, filled with anecdotes and personal revelations.Quotes that I feel summarize the theme of Big Sur and perhaps Henry Miller's motivation for living there are the following:"Surely every one realizes, at some point along the way, that he is capable of living a far better life than the one he has chosen.""We create our fate everyday."If you're a Henry Miller fan, this is the book to read to come to understand the man and the writer. He also draws a vivid picture of Big Sur era before it became heavily trafficked and overpopulated to the north of it. Definitely worth the time it'll take to read it.

Everything Henry Miller ever wrote -- and he wrote a lot -- is well worth reading. Here one gets a feel for how Miller allowed his fascination with friends to gull him into being taken advantage of time after time. One comes away from this memoir wishing to have been one of those friends just for the opportunity to share space with a fascinating man.

First off there can be a perceivable gap between 'good' and 'great' writing and although Miller's writing may not be 'great' when actually aligned with the greats of literature, it certainly is very good. He is a perfect writer for describing the 'colony' of Big Sur in its early stages. Primarily enjoyable because of the context Miller gives the experience. Bravo!

This book got me laid

I have read this book about 5 times, having it always on my Kindle is a real treat. This book, I feel is one of Henry Millers best. The time he spent in Big Sur in the 40's and 50's when it was really and artist's colony. Some of the character studies are so well written that you feel you know the person as a friend by the time you are through reading it. For anyone interested in Big Sur and it history, this is a great book to read, or if you just want something relaxing to venture into...

Absolutely wonderful memoir of Miller's days in Big Sur, California, way back when before it became a tourist stop on the map. Beautiful descriptions, funny stories, poignant reflections on a world that no longer exists. Personally, I enjoy Henry Miller's non-fiction works more than his novels. He is one of the greatest American writers, and this is one of his best books. It's been a long time since I passed through Big Sur; reading Miller's memoir made me nostalgic for all those golden days spent in California.

If you love Henry Miller, you have to read this book. Even if you've never heard of Henry Miller, pick up this book and enjoy it. He paints a picture of paradise in a little place called Big Sur and if you are anything like me, you'll be planning a trip there just to see what he's talking about. You have to read this book!

Having always heard the usual praise for Miller, along with references to his sexualized novels, it was a pleasant surprise to discover this wonderful, evocative description of the early days of Big Surprise. The writing is magnificent and the observations on life very wise.

This is when a category transitions from a product-focused sale to techies and visionaries, to a market-drive sale to more pragmatic and risk adverse customers.

Also, it would have been great to see updated examples of the principles described which would make it easier to reflect upon from a more recent perspective.

There are a number of great insights in this book, especially for engineers who are beginning to climb up out of their heavy technical world and want to have true and serious impact on the real world. I was a bit disappointed to see that the transformation to the online version appears to have at least one recurring defect. It looks like some symbol used in lists in the paper book does not translate properly into a symbol in the on-line version. What we see on the Kindle Reader on the iPad are lines starting with "535." It would be nice if there were someway to point out these defects to someone with an expectation of this copy automatically get updated at some point in time.Even with this annoyance, which caused me to downgrade the book by one star, the book is very readable and useful. I was also a bit surprised to see that the Kindle version of the book is slightly more expensive than the paper version, which makes no sense to me at all!
