About the Author
Ralph Metzner obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Harvard University, where he collaborated with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert on psychedelic research. He is the author of more than 100 articles as well as several books, including The Unfolding Self and Green Psychology. He is a psychotherapist in private practice and Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. President and co-founder of the Green Earth Foundation, he lives in Sonoma, California.

Overtones and Undercurrents is a truly remarkable and potentially life-changing book. In it, Ralph Metzner offers theory, but most importantly practical methods for exploring notions that challenge the basic paradigm of Western scientific thinking and therefore the assumptions about reality that we all tend to take for granted. His approach is completely experiential, based on his own observations and those of the hundreds who have participated in his psycho-spiritual teachings and workshops as individuals or in groups.It takes courage to speak out on subjects that the mainstream ridicules, but Metzner is well-known for this as a pioneer in exploring psychedelics and consciousness research. In this most personal book he takes on most directly what seems to have been hiding in plain sight behind a veil of collective denial: experiences of reincarnation, the presence of ancestors and spirit guides, and possession. Not only those skeptical of spirituality, but many people involved in meditation and “non-dual†approaches to spirituality, deny or take no interest in these subjects which Metzner brings into focus. His basic approach to this is simply to suggest that one keep an open mind to possibilities and explore. That is, be open not only to the possibility that these phenomena are realities and important aspects of our life in the present, but be open to the possibility that the methods suggested may give you direct experience.The methods suggested sometimes include the use of entheogenic substances, but only in combination with internal practices which he emphasizes can also be done without those “medicines.†In this regard, he offers detailed explanations and instructions for working with these phenomenon for purposes of accessing healing or guidance. Each chapter includes personal acounts of people (includng the author himself) who found benefit from direct experiences with a past life or an encounter with a discarnate spirit being.I can say without hesitation that this book had a profound effect on my own life personally and professionally as a psychotherapist. While I had previously thought of myself as open to these ideas, this book gave me the courage to suspend the residues of doubting-mind enough to open myself more deeply to the actuality. From there the doors of perception have continued to open wider. Likewise professionally, I have been more open to seeing and working with the seemingly invisible overtones and undercurrents that influence the lives of those I work with as a therapist and guide. For this I extend my gratitude to Ralph Metzner for another of his many contributions to the evolutionary journey of humanity. I highly recommend this book.
