Many of Guys books will help you as an entrepreneur, a startup, an evangelist and more. This book has some of that too, but so much more and is a great read even if you have no interest in business. . Direct, warm, poignant, authentic and just plain fun to read. It has so many nuggets from an ever more interesting life. A collection of great short stories and observations.I read this quote from Oliver Wendall Holmes long ago, and it fits perfectly here. "I think that as life is action and passion, it is required of a man that he should share the passion and action of his time at peril of being judged not to have lived." Guy has truly lived and shared!!! Shaka & Mahalo Guy K

Back in 2013, while I was working as Human Resources Director for the City of Medford, Oregon, I was pleased to be asked to be an early reader of an interesting publication called APE: Author-Publisher-Entrepreneur by Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch. This was an amazing guide for budding authors and even experienced ones seeking to move into the digital age. This year, the task was different--to review a pre-publication copy of Guy’s 15th book: Wise Guy, released today by Penguin Random House/Portfolio Books.Wise Guy is Guy’s most personal book. It’s not a traditional memoir but a series of vignettes. It reflects a wide range of experiences that have enlightened and inspired him. He tells stories from his childhood in Hawaii, his education at Stanford and UCLA, his first job in the jewelry business, work for Steve Jobs at Apple, and his adoption of surfing at the age of 62.Guy, who served two “tours of duty” as he puts it for Apple (from 1983-1987 and 1995-97), writes extensively and distills his experience there into 11 points of wisdom:• Only excellence matters.• Customers can’t tell you what they need.• Innovation happens on the next curve.• Design counts• Less is more.• Big challenges beget big accomplishments.• Changing your mind is a sign of intelligence.• Engineers are artists.• Price and value are not the same thing.• But value isn’t enough.• Some things need to be believed to be seen. While expressing that he “made a mistake” at not returning for a third tour when asked by Steve Jobs to run Apple University, he clearly says if he had stayed at Apple, he wouldn’t have started companies, become a venture capitalist, advised dozens of other entrepreneurs and written more than a dozen books. While these points are instructive, they are only four pages of this easily read 260-page book. Guy covers everything from moral values to business skills to parenting. In addition to his story telling, I found most enlightening his 10 distilled lessons in the chapter he calls Postpartum:• Get high and to the right (be unique and valuable).• Adopt a growth mindset (among others, he recommends Carol Dweck’s book Mindset, which is a fascinating work of its own).• Embrace grit (achieving success is hard work).• Smile (there’s no such thing as being too nice).• Default to yes (say no only after contemplating information)• Raise the tide (life is not a zero-sum game).• Pay it forward (do good works and make the world a better place.• Examine everything (healthy skepticism not negativity)• Never lie, seldom shade (lying takes too much time and energy).• Enable people to pay you back (fostering self-worth in others).I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and enthusiastically recommend it.

I expect that Kawasaki will always write a worthwhile book, and this one, as usual, doesn’t disappoint. The book is full of real-world advice on a variety of topics, such as writing, public speaking, parenting, social media, and negotiating, to name a few. There are many entertaining anecdotes that also impart a message. There is one, for example, about Kawasaki’s father reacting to a situation Kawasaki encountered outside his house in Silicon Valley: don’t look for problems, for discrimination, don’t go through life angry and negative. Man up.Kawaski has a frank, and often humorous approach to communication which is also displayed in this book. For example: “It’s very hard to evangelize crap.” Or: “Be positive or be silent. If you don’t have something positive to say, shut up and keep scrolling. I don’t advise making it obvious that you’re a jerk.”There are also some intriguing new concepts I learned such “aintegration,” the ability to cope with contradictions, paradoxes, and discontinuities.I also liked the advice on what books to read and have made a list of the ones I haven’t read yet.My overall impression of the book is that Kawasaki wants to genuinely share the life lessons he learned to help others. And the sincerity shines through on each page. Readers would do well implementing some of his advice. It could pay dividends in one’s life. One of the many quotes Kawasaki uses to start each chapter is Oscar Wilde’s “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” That’s what this book does. It encourages you to look at the stars.Disclosure: Kawasaki mentions my book.

Here’s this “Guy” who worked for Steve Jobs, and he’s come to some of the same conclusions in his career that I have, but it’s intriguing to hear how it all went down. If you’re mid-career or middle-age, you’ve likely come to your own understanding by now about the importance of relationships and reciprocation; what’s interesting is learning how Guy came to his personal conclusions and the experiences that formed his opinions. It’s fascinating to hear stories from his unique perspective, from his younger years in Hawaii and California, to working in Silicon Valley when the tech culture there was forming, to present day. While relatable to many situations, Wise Guy would make an especially great gift for a high school or college graduate. There’s some compelling material about getting the most out of your college years that I wish I'd have had to consider earlier in life.My biggest takeaways:- Who you know and your relationships are important.- Reciprocate!- People who demanded the best from him were the ones he learned the most from (and he appreciated their high standards).- In a relatable way, he remembers awkward situations or disappointments from his past and considers how things would be different had they gone another way. These led to some of his greatest lessons.I loved his listing of every job he’s had and how he obtained it. And Guy, if you’re reading this, I first though Twitter was dumb, too!

I was looking for something to keep track of our son's future Dr's visits. I purchased 2, one for my niece as she is expecting as well. I have to say couldn't be happier. It is well organized starting with the Birth and followed by 1st months well visit. It has room for the vaccinations and medical notes as well as progress. Definitely recommend if you want to stay organized and on top of your Newborn's medical records at home. Easy to use for daycare as well as it shows proof of vaccinations and can be copied if necessary.

I was so excited to get this, as it has a lot of space for information about your baby and it is very easy to record all the esential data. This is perfect to keep track of important notes like doctors appointments, illneses, dental records, growth charts and more.I have bought it together with this baby book, so I could document all my baby's important milestones:First 5 Years Baby Memory Book + Clean-Touch Ink Pad + Gift Box. Record Your Girl or Boy Photos & Milestones. Keepsake Journal | Scrapbook | Photo Album. Modern Baby Shower Gift for Expecting ParentsThese two make the perfect kit for every parent and are a must have for a new mom.I'm Super happy!

This is exactly what I was looking for. My baby has had issues with her ears since she was only a few months old. I wanted a way to document all of her doctor visits and medications that she has been prescribed. This book will suit your child from newborn through 18 years old.INCLUDES:.Introduction (place for child's name and primary doctor)..Family Health History..Notes from Baby's Birth..Well Child Visits from Newborn through 18 years old..Sick Child Calls and Visits..Record of Illnesses, Allergies, Accidents, & Chronic Conditions..Immunization Record..Child's Growth Charts..Dental Records..Primary Teeth Chart (for when teeth come in & are lost)..Notes..Pocket on inside of back cover to keep special documents..The cover is made out of a thick board (not quite as thick as baby board books) and has a glossy finish..Book includes an elastic to keep the book shut. This book is amazing. It really is a must have. There are not many options when it comes to a health record book, but this one really has it all.My only complaint is that I wish it had a few more pages for Sick Visits to the doctor. It only has 21 slots for sick visits to last 18 years.

MThis comes in so handy, especially if you've had complications such as a premature baby (like me) or a baby with other pre-existing conditions. Especially love how detailed it is. Also a great way to keep track of doctors appointments & immunizations, too. My only criticism would be the size. While the smaller size can come in handy, it kind of makes the pocket in back (which for me was one of the selling points) obsolete since you can only fit a couple things in there before it starts getting pretty bulky. Still, a small pocket is better than none in my opinion; you can at least stash prescriptions and doctors notes in there. And sure, you could easily keep this info on an app on your phone, but when it comes to your child's health it never hurts to have a handwritten record of everything. Please let me know if you found this review helpful, as I rely heavily on others' reviews for my Amazon purchases as well. Thanks so much!

This product is exactly what I was looking for! I was born in California and they use to give out these booklets that you’d bring to every doctor visit for them to fill out and to keep track of everything. In Illinois they gave out these yellow cards that keep track of shots only. I wanted something similar to what I had growing up, but they don’t give booklets here. Just printouts. So this booklet was absolutely perfect and exactly what I was looking for! My daughter is almost 4 months old and will be getting some of her immunization shots soon so I bought this for her pediatrician to write in each time she has a check up and gets her shots. This booklet is fantastic because not only can I keep track of that, but I can keep track of her dental, growth, and when she’s sick. The booklet has a back pocket to keep important documents too which is perfect for keeping those printouts they give. You can fit so much information in this book. It’s lightweight and fits easily in a purse or diaper bag. Absolutely amazing and highly recommended if you’re looking for something to keep track of your child’s health records.

I love this records book. It it so cute and so detailed. My favorite feature is the little pocket in the back where I store my daughters little cards she gets from her pediatrician. I got a state vaccine record for my son when he was born in Arizona (Louisiana doesn't have them) but I am tempter to purchase another of these books so he can have all of the details when he is older as well. While this may take some time if not purchased for a baby, it would still be worth it. Everything is laid out for you. Also great for organization. you don't have to keep every single piece of paper anymore!

I love this handy book it's so easy to input all the data that is essential to track as a new parent in one simple place the pages are concise without a ton of irrelevant question or blanks the only reason I rate as 4 stars and not 5 is the chart in the back for growth is very small and can be difficult to plot points however this is a small concession for how great this record keeper is

I was so excited to get this! I love how detailed everything is, I didn't even expect there to be charts. I'm terrible at organizing records, so I hoped that this would keep me on track a bit better. It's gender neutral and the stiff cover is a nice touch, I feel like it won't wear out and fall apart.

Review

"Reisner manages the nearly impossible feat of explaining geopolitical history, hydro-engineering, plate tectonics and comparative seismology in an engaging, delightfully literate fashion. This important book will appeal to many, including those outside the Golden State. Environmentalists will naturally go for it, but Reisner's witty, concise prose will attract general readers, too." —Publishers Weekly"This posthumous work by the author of the award-winning Cadillac Desert is a fitting tribute to his environmental concerns and the power of his writing." —Library Journal"Nothing Stephen King has ever written is nearly as frightening." —The San Diego Union-Tribune

From the Inside Flap

In "A Dangerous Place, Marc Reisner, the author of "Cadillac Desert, the classic history of the American West and its fatal dependence on water, returns to the subject that never ceased to seduce him: California. Writing with his signature command of his subject and with compelling resonance, Reisner leads us through California's improbable history and rise from a largely desert land to the most populated state in the nation, fueled by an economic engine more productive than all of Africa. Reisner believes that the achievement of this, the last great desert civilization, hinges on California's denial of its own inescapable fate. Both the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas sit astride two of the most violently seismic zones on the planet. The earthquakes that have already rocked California were, according to Reisner, mere prologues to a future cataclysm that will result in destruction of such magnitude that the only recourse will be to rebuild from the ground up. Reisner concludes "A Dangerous Place with a hypothetical but chillingly realistic description of such a disaster and its horrifying aftereffects.

Reisner's "Cadillac Desert" made me a fan of his writing; it covers water issues throughout the arid West. This work focuses particularly on Bay-area earthquake hazards. While the subject matter is not so geographically-widespread, ...on the one hand it seems no less urgent. On the other hand, for many it probably remains a matter of: "Out of sight, out of mind...UNTIL THE BIG ONE HITS!

Mr. Reisner is a very potent writer who is incredibly learned on this most scary of topics. I was already aware of these impending difficulties with regard to California but I learned an awful lot of background history that helped inform a better contextual grasp of the situation. The recent fires in the Sonoma valley are part and parcel of a future apocalyptic scene that will be orders of magnitude worse for the state and its peoples.

This book is required reading for all, not only Californians. We are talking here about the BIG ONE, the inevitable next large earthquake to hit the San Andreas fault system. It is not a question of if it will happen, but when -- next year, in 2010, or perhaps not until the year 2110? When it happens, it will undoubtedly be the largest national disaster on record, killing thousands, and destroying buildings and infrastructure with a cost of...well, some dollar figure best written with scientific notation. The book is organized into three parts: Part 1 summarizes the colonization history of southern California, L.A., and San Fransciso, explaining how the cities came to be and how half of the western population somewhat suprisingly now resides therein; Part 2 briefly discusses the basics of plate tectonics, earthquakes, and the numerous geographic and geologic hazards unique to California; and Part 3 is a fictional diary of the author's day set in the near future (February 28, 2005), the day a large quake occurs on the Hayward Fault on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay. Parts 1 and 2 are both informative and well written, but it is Part 3 that is particularly disturbing; the entire scenario is drawn from experiences of past earthquakes and the author's local knowledge, and the description is quite plausible. The consequences of such an earthquake are difficult to envision, but I believe that you will find Mr. Reisner's fictional treatment really hits the mark.I read one of his previous books, "Cadillac Desert" and found it politically one-sided and tough to finish. This book is different. It is short (181 pages, I finished it in two sittings), very well-written, and carefully researched (as a professional geologist, even I was unaware of the consequences a large quake in San Francisco would potentially have to the water supply of Los Angeles).Sadly, the young Marc Reisner passed away in 2000, so this will likely be his last book. That is truly unfortunate! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a even a passing interest in U.S. history, science, and/or politics, and especially to those of you who live on the left coast. One thing for sure, as noted by the well-known philosopher Will Durant: "Civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to change without notice."

Factual representation in 1dt half of book for how CA has been changed and how a great quake will affect residents. Eye opening! Lived in the area for 35 year and had no idea of the affects. Lived through the "89 quake and was 10 miles from the epicenter in Santa Cruz.

great read

Excellent and very readable companion to Mr. Reisner's "Cadillac Desert."

For all fans of Marc Reisner who mourn that he died too soon, this is a too-short but tantalizing glimpse at what his next book would have been. Like his earlier work, Cadillac Desert, this one focuses on California and the natural features that make it such an inhospitable place to put a civilization. The description of how the Los Angeles basin became urbanized is wonderful and informative. Not only is most of California an arid place, it is also a seismic accident waiting to happen....again. I had no idea that a combination of an earthquake in the Bay Area could -- nay, eventually WILL -- interact with the peculiar hydrologic and agricultural situation of the Sacramento Delta to cause a disaster that will deprive southern California of water for a long, long time.

I was more interested in "water usage & consumption" dynamics which were only marginally covered--however, a good summary of seismological issues.

Another excellent cookbook from Isa! First of all, the cookbook is beautiful and fun to flip through. Second, the food is amazing. I have only had the cookbook for a week, but have already made the Cannellini and Andouille Jambalaya, the homemade Andouille sausage, the Sweet and Smoky Glazed Tofu Ham, the Fancy/Not So Fancy Mushroom Gravy, the Green Bean Casserole, and the Peanut Butter Brownies. Everything turned out great, although the jambalaya recipe was missing the oven temperature (375 Fahrenheit worked for me). The Glazed Tofu Ham was the centerpiece of my Thanksgiving meal and everybody loved it. Highly recommended, I have a feeling this is going to become my favorite cookbook!

I have a lot of vegan cookbooks. It is rare that I purchase one with so many good, easy recipes as this one. So far, I have made: cheeseburger pizza, grilled wedge salad, cauliflower casserole, glazed tofu ham, cheese blintzes, and fettucine alfredo & broccoli. Everything has been amazing. It pretty much never happens that I can make this many recipes from a single cookbook and have them all turn out perfectly delicious. There are so many other things I want to make from this book, and I am sure they will all be as equally delicious!

Oh my god- I have already made multiple Thanksgiving recipes from this book for my Friendsgiving celebration this weekend. SO. GOOD. The green bean casserole and pumpkin pie were both perfect and I can't wait to try the cauliflower onion casserole + stuffing recipe for the day of Thanksgiving. These recipes are "superfun" but not only just for holidays. I will use a lot of these during the year! Anything from Isa Chandra never disappoints and this is no exception.

I cannot begin to explain how freaking fantastic this book is. I used it to make the most amazing vegan Thanksgiving dinner (chickpea cutlets, creamy whipped potatoes, bean and sage gravy, and green bean casserole), and did not have a dud recipe in the bunch, even keeping the omnivores happy. It's the first holiday where the leftovers have not become a chore to eat. The recipes are simple and delicious. I already have tons more recipes bookmarked, as many don't have to necessarily be"holiday" foods. I can't recommend this book enough.

Isa Chandra Moskowitz has a gift, and she shares it with everyone willing to take the time. I have all of her cookbooks. "The Superfun Times Vegan Holiday Cookbook" is fantastic. I used it to prepare my vegan Thanksgiving this year; I made Steamed Chicky Dumplings, Biscuits and White Pepper Gravy, Irish Stout Stew, Sweet and Smoky Glazed Tofu Ham, Pinto-Seitan Cutlets, Carmelized Onion and Cauliflower Casserole, and Classic Carrot Cake. Her "Isa Does It Cookbook" and Vegan With A Vengeance" and "Veganomicon"along with "The Superfun Times Cookbook" are "go-to" encyclopedias! I look forward to any new book she comes out with! If you are new to the vegan lifestyle, do yourself a favor, buy Isa's cookbooks. She has also co-authored cookbooks with Terry Hope Romero, too. Every recipe I have tried has been super good. If I could give this 10 stars I would!

This book is full of some of the most delicious vegan recipes I’ve ever created!!!! Holy vegetables, Batman! The deviled potatoes? My Easter guests (carnivores included) devoured them, said they tasted like the real thing, AND went and found the recipe to make it themselves that week! My dad ( a hunter and fisher and questioner of my veganism), tried the Irish stout stew with mashed potato biscuits and asked how I got it “to taste so meaty”! I’m obsessed with Isa and her recipe methods. I have learned some really great tips and tricks and substitutes to make your vegan food taste divine. You should buy this book if you want to make everyone at your dinner table, and tables you bring food to, deliciously satiated! (The picture is of the deviled eggs and orange pecan sticky rolls from this cookbook. The quiche is from a different vegan cookbook)

I am a big Isa fan--I have all of her cookbooks and her recipes are on a constant rotation in my house. Isa's recipes are so good I don't have to clarify them as "vegan" to others, it is just good food. I love how this book is laid out into holidays--it makes putting a larger meal together a bit easier with dishes that can complement one another. The dishes in this book are not repeats of her others, so if you own her other books this one is still a must. I have so far made the Truffle Alfredo with Garlicky Broccoli, Chipotle Mac, Hoppin John Bowl, Crab Cakes, and the Cinnamon Swirl Bread, and have plans to make a few more this week. The only downside is sometimes the recipes take quite a bit of time--I never go by the cook time in the book. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to prep. But it!

I'm not fully vegan, just vegetarian, but I love this author's cookbooks because they're inventive, fun, and above all, they are full of tasty food. I haven't met a dud recipe yet. This cookbook in particular is handy with its holidays and themed recipes! I just had inspiration for my vegetarian Easter and made the glazed tofu ham (TASTY) and the blueberry meyer lemon scones (AMAZING). I'm going to have a lot of fun cooking and eating this year, I can tell. My friends and family will be super-happy, too. The photographs are gorgeous and the recipes are frank about cooking times and have simple instructions.Update: I've made vegan holidays several times now - the scones again, because wow (and they brought the house down - good thing I made a double recipe), and the smoky dogs that even my picky, picky, meat-eating brother loved - better than real hot dogs, that's for sure-- and the deviled potatoes (am-A-zing), and the pan bagnat, which was stunningly good, and rhubarb crisp, and, and ... anyway, my review remains Five stars.
