When I graduated the University I didn't realize I was 1 credit short of being an Art History Minor. I'm far from an expert. What Dr. Turley writes about the symbolism of the great works of art was lost in my studies in a secular view. Only the beauty of works created through the Grace of God can be explained in the context of God. Dr. Turley opened my eyes to the great works and revealed the Divine inspiration of the artists and the meaning that has no greater.
In the modern world we say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or subjective. Turley shows us how there are objective and beautiful ways you can begin appreciating, in a really understandable way, the beauty and depth in much art, especially classic art. His style is so witty and cheerful too!
Turley helps us to view art -- great art with a discriminating palette as a great sommelier can discriminate between an ok wine and a great wine. In an age where just because the individual is the sole arbiter of what is good or true or even beautiful this small book is an awakening not just for the eye of beholder, but opens the windows of the soul to see more clearly that there are indeed standards that define works of human hand and intellect. Mystery is not something we solve but something we can return to and enter more deeply with each encounter should we take the time to gaze, to wonder, ponder and seek. Bravo Dr. Turley!

This book has been a God send for my art theory and practise. Thank you Dr Turley.
Dr. Turley initiates the reader into the symbolism of Christian art through 8 great works, including provocatively, Van Gough's Starry Night as a finale. The book is admirably direct and simple, designed for teachers and home-schooling parents and young people. At first the sense of decoding a visual masterpiece, with the assumption that most everything has a symbolic meaning or historical reference, can seem alien to a modern reader educated with secular-scientific assumptions. The ancient world and its Medieval heirs, and into modern times so long as Classical and Christian education prevailed, thought otherwise. Meaning was everything, and symbolism was a basic assumption. Dr. Turley opens up this dimension of art wonderfully. He begins with the concept of gazing, or theoria, as a Christian process of spiritual transformation through visual contemplation. Although he continues with the Christian meaning and references to the masterpieces he examines, he might have included more material on how inward reflection and contemplation, with meanings understood, actually can work to enlighten, delight, and transform. Perhaps that is the job of the teacher to consider and pass on to her or his student.
As a teacher I often look for opportunities to integrate art into my language and literature classes. As an administrator I have often encouraged my fellow humanities teachers to do the same. Through admiring the visual arts we are able to engage students with lessons in truth, beauty, and goodness in a manner different than that found in the written art of language and literature. Steve Turley's work in "Gazing" is a true gem, a valuable tool that allows any teacher, parent, or student to begin the journey of wonder through art via concise, simple, and non-intimidating lessons. Turley provides a context and a framework for each piece along with discussion points that will draw students into the artist's world that they may gaze deeply through his eyes.
Dr. Turley draws you into each of the works of art he analyzes. This is a must have book for the art teacher as well as the art lover. As an art teacher I wish I would have had this resource twenty years ago!
