I have had an enthusiastic interest in philosophy for most of my life. I have taken numerous philosophy courses over the last 55 plus years and when I saw this huge 684 page hardcover book (Masterpieces of World Philosophy by Frank N. Magill, Editor) for a bargain price on Amazon I immediately purchased it.This amazing book has nearly 100 philosophy classics from the world’s greatest philosophers. Each section is analyzed and explained in detail with the most important points emphasized. This is not a book one can just skim over because to understand the deeper aspects of philosophical ideas requires intellectual effort and study. The real value of this huge book is that it covers most of the philosophers and the ideas that have shaped our intellectual world today.The following is just a small sample of the material in this incredible text: Analects of Confucius, Plato’s Euthyphro, apology, Crito, and his Republic. Aristotle’s Metaphysics, ethica nicomachea, and politics. Summary isn't really how I'd describe the passages in this book. It requires quite a bit of prior knowledge to understand some of it, let alone all of it. This is basically a summary for people already familiar with philosophy, but if you're already familiar with it, what's the point? I think this is the quintessential pretentious book that uses difficult language, masking very simple points. It's sad how word choice makes a field so out of touch for the rest of ordinary persons, that I understand now why philosophy is a dead major.
This is not a work one reads once; it is a reference that one will use again and again over the course of a lifetime. It is thorough and straightforward, and should be in the library of anyone who loves philosophy.
This is a nice idea, but disappointingly thin representation of non-western philosophy. for example, of 100 works there are only 8 on non-western philosophy, only 2 on Indian works. Good conception for entry structure, but poor selection for "World Philosophy". It would be better to have called in "Masterpieces of Anglo-European Philosophy wit Glimpses Elsewhere".
Excellent review of books and related literature for philosophers of history and more recent contributors of the philosophic dialog. Very well written usually 2 to 4 page summaries of the philosopher's key books. A great way to review the philosophic dialog in print and especially helpful are the summary of basic ideas at the beginning of each book review. It is helpful for those as a guide for going on to read theoriginals. Kind of a cliffs notes to philosophy. Very valuable.Roland R. Kratzner
Very well written summaries of the major philosophers up to the 1950's stopping at an excellent review of Ludwig Wittgensein's work. Great for history of philosophy but unfortunately few modern philosophers included in volume 2. For these the 1990 edition of Masterpieces is needed as a supplement. This volume has many philosophers which the 1990 volume has to omit because of space restrictions so I see these volumes as also needed to supplement the 1990 edition.Roland R. Kratzner
I have to say I was quite surprised at how fast the book arrived!!! It was in excellent condition.....the book is great and an excellent resource for research!!
