This book is so much fun! I really enjoyed the story of this couple making their way in France after a lifetime in the U.S. Since I studied French years ago, I very much enjoyed translating some words before she did so. I had read Laura Bradbury's "Grape" series and this book reinforced what Bradbury had said about that region of France. The long, wine-filled lunch breaks, and the quite life in a French village. I recommend this book, as well as the Grape series.

Just finished this book. It was a delightful read that took me through the trials and tribulations of an ex-pat couple who were looking for a change of cultures... and they sure got what they wanted! Their daily routines, meeting and making French friends, surviving language misunderstandings (and a serious health issue), and immersing themselves in their village all combined to make me want to know this couple - and to know what they are now doing! Hope that there'll be a sequel to this book. (A few editing issues keep my review at 4.5*)

I enjoy living vicariously through fun true adventures of living in France. Knorr's accounts are entertaining but also helpful for those serious about the expat life in France. The stories express reality because she did not have a boatload of money to throw into her project. I'll be watching for additional adventures.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Lots of fun, realistic and funny. Makes me want to move to Europe when I can in a few years

I have read a dozen ex-pat memoirs and I would put this one near the top of my list. The writing is nuanced and detailed. The people and situations are described in a light, humorous way and the appreciation for the French culture is evident.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A lovely escape to the Frenchcountryside. Highly recommend. Makes me want to do the same thing!

Likeable good entertaining stories. Each adventure full of newness and enjoyment of the moments that makes life in the lovely country something not to take for grante.d

One of the best books that I have read, written by an American who moved to France, purchased a home and immersed herself, with her husband, in the French culture. Rosanne does a wonderful job of including the reader with her experiences.

My 71-year-old, white, Christian, able-bodied, educated, successful, cishet father and I have been having a good ongoing conversation about the #metoo movement. He struggles with the idea that even a few innocent men will be maligned if we #believewomen. This book moved him to tears to learn how much worse the repercussions of rape culture are for me and his granddaughters than he thought possible.

I went on a bit of a journey through Opposite Land while reading this book. I love that this book exists. I hate that it has to.The title was what initially grabbed my attention: Not That Bad. How many times have I and countless others said that?! Was it because it wasn’t that bad? No. It was that bad but we still live in a world that, on the whole, doesn’t want to know about sexual assault. It doesn’t quite feel right to say I have a favourite anything where rape culture is concerned so instead I’ll say that the best definition of rape culture I’ve read to date is by Clem Ford: “A state of existence in which the impact and reality of sexual violence is minimised while the perpetrators of it are supported by a complex system built on flawed human beliefs, mythologies about gender, and good old fashioned misogyny."Usually I’d give each contributor in a book of essays an individual star rating and comment on their writing style or whether I connected with their story or not, but I won’t be doing that here. I’m so proud of everyone that contributed to this book and while some essays impacted me more than others, I’m not comfortable critiquing anyone’s experience of rape culture. My full review (too long to post here), including a quote from each contributor’s essay, can be found on my Goodreads profile.

This is an extremely intense book for anyone to read, but it’s well worth it. This book was able to put words to feelings I’ve never been able to articulate. It touched parts of me that have long since hidden in darkness. It gave me solidarity, it made me feel not alone and justified my anger. This allows me to feel, without guilt or shame, something that I’ve never felt before.I...Am...EVERY...PERSON ... IN... THIS... BOOKI can relate in some way to all of them.Thank you for this.

These essays are powerful and hard to read, but they gave me hope and courage too. We aren't alone and we have each other.

We shouldn’t have to need a book like this. But we do need a book like this.In the introduction, Roxane Gay explains that when she set out to assemble NOT THAT BAD, she intended to collect essays about rape culture, intermingling reportage with personal stories and writing that centered on the idea of “rape culture.” When she started receiving submissions, she realized that the book needed to be a place for people to give testimony, to come forth, to share just how deeply they have been marked. The result is this book, a collection of many voices. It spans age, race, body, class and gender. Most, but not all, of the voices are women’s, both trans and cis. Most, but not all, of their perpetrators are men, presenting the undeniable truth of systemic male violence while refusing to avoid the realities of queer trauma, of cissexism. The simple volume of voices is staggering --- it’s actually exhausting to realize just how many stories there are like these. When you realize what you’ve likely always known, what you might not want to think about, what you might not be able to avoid knowing: just how many stories there are like these. The accounts differ in experience, and in severity, but Gay emphasizes that each are “that bad.” There is a wide and important margin between rape and harassment, between language and action, but only in matter of degree --- and degree that cannot, in any real or purposeful way, be quantified. Some of these experiences have ruined a life, but all of them have altered lives. They are not the same, but they are rooted in the same issues, the same culture of rape, violence, misogyny and toxic masculinity. This is a book for everybody. It is a book that involves everybody, that affects everybody, because no one is immune from rape culture unless you consciously recognize its pervasiveness in our culture, and in yourself, and work to disentangle yourself from its poison.I will not call it timely. I will not call it provocative. To read this was, simply, agonizing. It was agonizing because it is the truth, because this is the raw truth of our world, at least our country. To know these experiences, to see yourself in some of them and to recognize how close you were, are, might be, could be, to so many of the others, is a terrifying, horrific thing. But it is the truth, and there is a vicious, important power in seeing it spelled out. It is not triumph. As AJ McKenna says in her piece, “Sixty-Three Days,” “And I thought This, this is the one that solves it, but it didn’t. Nothing ever does.”This is what rape culture looks like. This is what it sounds like. This is what it feels like. This country alone bears a million of these stories, maybe even an infinity, if you keep going back. Not a matter of if but when. Not a matter of if but of degree.Reading this book makes my face hot. It makes my head ache. It makes me angry. It wears me out. It is not a solution. But --- it is a reckoning. It does, in the clearest way, what survivors and victims have been asking for --- it gives them voice. This book gives voice, no qualifications. It is a validation. It believes you. It understands, all too well. It spells out what often goes unsaid, it lifts to the surface that which has been forcibly buried. It digs at scars because it uplifts the scarred and says yes, I see you, I see your hurt, and that should not have happened to you, and it did, and it changed you, and that matters, and you are not alone.I believe you. This was not your fault. You are not alone.By telling these stories, we see the degrees. We see the layers of behavior, from grooming to harassment to assault and rape, and we see how it manifests in masculinity, in misplaced power. Rape as an exhibition of power, as an exploitation of power, as an expectation, as a punishment, as a colonization. The more we listen to those who have endured rape culture, the more we can recognize how ingrained it is, the more we can combat it. The more we can say hey, this happened, this is happening. Hey, that’s not okay. Hey, that’s not funny. Hey, I said no. The more we can say, I believe you. This was not your fault. You are not alone. Some may find this book cathartic, others a resource, a reassurance, but ultimately it is fiercely necessary. Space these stories out. Take breaks, take care of yourself while you read it. Keep it with you. Refer to the contributor list and buy their books too, support them. I wish with all my heart that we did not need this book, but we do, and I am grateful for it with all that same heart.I believe you. This was not your fault. You are not alone.Reviewed by Maya Gittelma

One of the best anthologies I’ve read in forever. Roxane Gay complies amazing and eclectic essays that reach deep into the parts of us we tend to bury to avoid the emotions. The stories and observations also discuss the fear of myopic societies that refuse to examine the extraordinarily widespread problem of females lack of power, experience, confidence, and understanding of themselves since birth. Smile and nod, smile and nod.

Incredible and moving collection of essays and short stories. Thank you Roxane Gay for another incredible book!

If you relate to this topic at all (you do - whether you know it or not) you need to read this book. It was an honest, open, gut wrenching account of rape culture told through people of all color, age, gender, and economic status. It made me face issues in the past and let go of the guilt, pain, and self blame. I read aloud to my partner and used some of the stories as a talking point for issues we have been through because of the past. I wish I would have read this 15 years ago..

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to cook Malaysian food at home. The author is passionate about her work, and it shows in the quality of this book and the fact that the recipes are both delicious and well-suited to the home cook. Highly recommended.

Nice pictures, nice overview of spices and techniques in the beginning. Still searching for recipes for my fav dish from my local Malaysian restaurant (chicken with mango)

One of the best cookbooks I have purchased in a long time. Amazing dishes, easy to follow instructions!

Love this book, great recipes and techniques, especially for a novice, not to cooking, but to Malaysian cuisine. This book is beautifully illustrated and handsomely put together. Highly recommend.

Best cookbook I've read.

Great recipies!

Easy to follow recipes, and the cuisine is an interesting blend of Chinese, Thai, and Indian flavors. What's not to like?

This sumptuous book unlocks the many mysteries of SE Asian cooking. If you've often wondered about how to achieve the complexity of flavors that is the hallmark of this regional cooking-- savory, sweet, spicy and salty-- and "The Malaysian Kitchen" will answer all your questions. It starts with an excellent primer on individual spices: their source, uses and health benefits. But then Christina presents the reader with 150 easy-to-follow recipes that you might have though were only available in Malaysia or restaurants. I have lived in SE Asia and thought I knew the regional cooking. But I was only play acting at it until I met Christina Arokiasamy through her wonderful cookbooks. Now I prepare Malaysian Laksa and mango salad like a local.

Amazon.com Review

Sure, many of us in this modern world are cynical. The most cynical may even suspect that the news is manipulated and massaged by sponsors, that corporations act in their best interests, that political campaigns are determined not by votes, but by bucks, and that we don't get "all the news that's fit to print" but instead, "all the news that gets the ink". But even the most media-savvy amongst you will be awed by the behind-the-scenes descriptions of the Public Relations industry in action so masterfully described in this book. If you want your eyes to be opened, open them upon the pages of this book. (But remember: there are some very important people counting on you, and they really would prefer that you didn't ever hear about this book, much less buy it.)

From Publishers Weekly

Stauber and Rampton cite a classic example of image manipulation in this chilling analysis of the PR business. During the aftermath of the 1975 Three-Mile Island nuclear accident, a company spokesman said that a spark in the accumulated hydrogen bubble could result in a "spontaneous energetic disassembly"?otherwise known as an explosion. The authors trace certain specious practices of the $10 billion PR business to P.T. Barnum, who in 1836 wrote anonymous pro and con letters to editors about himself, generating heated interest. Modern public relations has evolved "crisis management" and "anti-" PR campaigns including sabotaging the tours of authors who challenge industry clients, for example, Jeremy Rifkin, author of Beyond Beef. The new euphemism for sewage sludge, "biosolids," is part of a campaign to convince the public that municipal sludge, replete with an astounding array of toxic substances, is good for farm soil. The authors point to Business for Social Responsibility, an organization that includes The Body Shop, Ben & Jerry's and others, as now containing "some of the most environmentally destructive corporations on the planet." Giant agencies extend their contracts to selling national policies, as Hill & Knowlton did in selling the Gulf war to the American public. Although most large news organizations at least rewrite PR materials, many smaller markets "rip and read" prepackaged video news releases. This is a cautionary reminder that much of the consumer and political world is created by for-hire mouthpieces in expensive neckties. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Want to know what is really going on behind closed doors? Want to know the ways in which the PR industry manipulates and lies to the public? Want to know who to trust? (Hint: Almost no one). This book really opened my eyes to the fact that we are manipulated by media from the moment we wake up until the moment we close our eyes at night. This was required reading for my Ethics in PR class in college. The book is somewhat dated, with most of the incidents taking place prior to the internet, but don't be fooled by online content either. The internet has only made it easier for the common person to be duped by big business.

Over two hundred and ten pages of tantalizing and juicy behind-the-scenes info that most of the general public is either ignorant about or could care less. This book is broken down into twelve seperate chapters; each chapter covers an important area of PR manipulation. The chapters are as follows:1] Burning Books Before They're Printed2] The Art of the Hustle and the Science of Propaganda3] Smokers' Hack4] Spinning the Atom5] Spies for Hire6] Divide and Conquer7] Poisoning the Grassroots8] The Sludge Hits the Fan9] Silencing Spring10] The Torturers' Lobby11] All the News That's Fit to Print12] Taking Back Your Own Back YardWhile reading this book, I really get the impression that the PR specialist are "artist" in their own way. Using the art of subtle manipulation and various other sneaky methods, these "story-tellers" are painting a picture of reality that puts the most positive light on some crummy issue, or corporate entity. While I always hear someone say 'you can't always believe what you see or read', I can't help but wonder if these people really understand the extent of their spoken words. This book will help shed some light.

Toxic Sludge is an expose of the Public Relations industry covering some of the worst examples of corporate greed and government perfidy up through 1995. Readers of Bernays' Propaganda and Larry Tye's The Father of Spin: Edward L. Bernays and The Birth of Public Relations might enjoy this book also. The book documents some truly abhorrent corporate behavior and shows how effective PR can be in supporting the powerful against the public interest. Think of this book as a prerequisite for the next level of analysis: Why does PR work so well, and how can we combat it?

an enlightening collection of articles that expose the PR scandals and ongoing campaigns of misinformation that cover our brains like so much toxic slime. The information is intelligently presented and serves as a primer on knowing exactly what is going on. Like the "War on Drugs," we unfortunately buy into way too much propaganda and yet we still call ourselves a "free" society.Libertarians and Ralph Nader wannabes everywhere should seriously consider ordering and reading this thorough and strangely entertaining work of illumination. It misses a point for being kinda pricey for its size (compare with "Everything You Know is Wrong.") Ironic - given its subject matter of being duped.I'm glad I got it, though.Just say Know!!!

Excellent, I love this book and the information in it is to be used in every classroom. Teachers, take a look at it and bring it to the students.I loved to learn about the tricks that corporations have used to make profits while disregarding the damage they have done to the environment and lied to use about it.This book illustrates how much of what we think of as independent, unbiased news and information has its origins in the boardrooms of the public relations companies. What your student will say after reading this books is something in the lines of:"Where have I been all this life?".A must read.

Edward Bernays flips in his grave. Everyone seeking the truth about issues should read this book. There is lots of information out there regarding propaganda/marketing/public relations - but this book cobbles the realities together into a form that really shows! how bad off we are today regarding seeking the truth. A must read for any environmental activist types.

Good

I borrowed this book from a friend and one chapter into it, I had to purchase a copy for myself. It is one of my favorite books and I often refer back to it. It gives really detailed insight into the PR industry. Surprisingly, it doesn't come off as preachy but just sticks to the facts. I have personally interacted with a "front group" for a fuel company claiming to be an environmental actvist organization similar to those outlined in this book and can testify that their tactics were just as Stauber describes. Please get this book. Everyone needs to be armed with this information.

I enjoy reading books focusing on exploration, and the Amazon basin is a source rich in possibility. The book River of Doubt, chronicling Theodore Roosevelt's Amazon adventure was particularly entertaining. I was somewhat disappointed, therefore, by this book, which is a quasi-biography of Percy Fawcett and his history of Amazon exploration.I say quasi-biography, because it is largely focused on Fawcett's disappearance and the author's belated search for clues as to his fate. The search for Fawcett became something of a cottage industry in the early to mid 1900s as numerous attempts were made to solve the mystery, many ending tragically. It's safe to say that Fawcett and his two companions either died of starvation/disease or were killed by hostile Indians. Not really much mystery there.Fawcett and many of his contemporaries were lured to the Amazon by the promise of riches, and the belief that a rich civilization once thrived in the region; referred to by many early Spaniards as El Dorado but termed "Z" by Fawcett. Accounts of such explorations are fascinating in their description of the hardships and unique experiences encountered by the explorers, though this book seems somewhat light in that respect, especially when compared to such books as River of Doubt and Stephen Ambrose's Lewis & Clark work. Too little detail on the travails encountered by the explorers is provided. The book rotates between accounts of Fawcett's exploits and those of the author in retracing Fawcett's steps. As a result, the flow of the narrative is disrupted and the overall story suffers as a result. Finally, the author finally claims that an advanced civilization has actually been recently uncovered in precisely the region that Fawcett was exploring, in effect positing that Fawcett's "Z" actually existed and was at least as advanced, if not more so, than contemporary settlements in Europe and Africa. While this may be true, I have not heard of it and suspect that the author is engaging in a bit of conjecture to the benefit of his subject and story line (again, I could be wrong). For those looking for a more satisfying experience in the realm of exploration, I would highly recommend the aforementioned River of Doubt and Ambrose's Lewis and Clark account, Undaunted Courage. Alan Morehead has written two fascinating accounts of Nile exploration and Shackleton's Voyage of Endurance is a spellbinder.

I loved reading this book because of its diversity. You get a well rounded history from multiple accounts of the many cursed expeditions into the Amazon. The crazy men who dared to do it (both present and past), violent tribal peoples (though you understand why they're so hostile to foreigners), the nearly impassable Amazon terrain, the odd and bizarre creatures that reside their, and in the end, a plausible archaeologically based theory behind why people thought there was a large rich city once in the Amazon. Like all things, people's imaginations run wild, but the author also brings you back down the earth with the reality of the jungle which left me with the overall conclusion that these grandiose theories of a Lost City of Z were really just grand exaggerations of much more practical evidence of a fairly developed, but long lost, past civilization. Some people criticize the book for only getting to the final expedition at the very end of the book. But I believe this criticism is unwarranted. You can't just jump into the final expedition without getting the backstory and context of the people, place, and time. I feel the author did a marvelous job of jumping around and pacing the book, so that when you get to the final expedition, you're well versed in the context and prepared to understand why things went down the way they did.Fantastic read, and I shall keep this book as a permanent fixture in my collection. Too bad I only got it in paperback... dang.

I found this book interesting in many ways. It was easy to read since it touched many subjects that are familiar to me. The book covers historic facts of the Victorian age and its influence in the world but specially South America and the countries of Bolivia and Brazil whose Amazonian region was and is difficult to explore or study. It is well balanced since the book covers many areas that help understand different points of view of previous times compared to present times. I found answers to questions that come up as you read this book. For instance, to refer to the tribes that populate the Amazonian forests as savages, made me question who is anyone to judge, specially after the atrocities of WWI, described in the book as well as all the inhuman spectacle of WW2. Also, it explains what was happening in the areas related to the fields he got to be involved in like archeology and the discovery of Machu Pichu which may have influenced him.Fawcett’s motivations could have been banal if they were glory or becoming famous but he showed an ethical position not usual in his time which was to approach the indigenous people in a non violent way, trying not to use arms and ordering to drop arms even if danger was felt. He would raise his hands and confront the Indians which gave him good results since he got to be treated as a sort of friend. This respectful behavior, considering the times, was something positive to take in account when trying to define Fawcett's personality which could show his humanity, something to learn from him. Now, consider that Indiana Jones is partly based in the real life of Percy Fawcett and P.F. is one of the characters of one of his movies; however, Indiana Jones had no problem in shooting for entertainment.Having lived in Bolivia and having done some exploration myself I may have a different take to this adventure. To start, one of Fawcett's motivation was as normal as to answer why people climb mountains, the answer is,” because it's there". I have done hiking going from La Paz at 12000 ft. above sea level to about 15000 ft. and then down to the tropics of Yungas which is the start of the Amazonian jungle all along an Inca road which was partly well preserved considering hundreds of years of use. After getting familiar with this subtropical region, it happened that I read The mines of King Salomon and this book, cited in Grann's book as well, inspired me to go farther. My plan was to go to an uncharted area in the forest called Madidi, which is a national park now. My motivation was just to see what no one else has seen. I was able to enlist two university friends who seemed interested but who back down at the last minute. Next year I tried again but I had a sudden back ache problem. Going back to the book, Fawcett's intentions may have been to attain fame by finding not El Dorado but something like Machu Pichu which was “found” in 1911. He visited Cusco and Tiahuanacu and was able to marvel at the achievements of these civilizations. But destiny put him in the Bolivian jungle with the aid of the British government, it wasn't something that he was looking for but that opened his eyes and his innate explorer spirit. Before I even finished reading this book I was compelled to read about the original source, Percy Fawcett's own words, compiled in a book “Lost trail, lost cities” by Brian Fawcett, his son. By reading it, I found out that in his first trip he was hired by the Bolivian government, P. Fawcett does not mention Brazil in the first expedition which was actually work. Now, there are historical details that are not clear. The border problem between Bolivia and Brazil was already established in 1903 after a short war between these two countries and the result was the annexation of the Acre, an area of 190,000 square Kilometers (75,000 sq mls), more than ¾ the size of UK. By the way, something that this book could have in next edition is a better map, the map of Bolivia is not clear. There are details in the Fawcett's book that could have been part of Grann's book or even the movie, like the moment when, after departing La Paz, one of many mules P.F. had, runs away and that was the mule that had the $£1000 in gold he received as part of the payment from the Bolivian government, an interesting historical detail, a “jingling treasure” in the saddle bags. However, Fawcett explains that the mule was brought back by local people who he rewarded. P .F. describes foreigners by name but there is no mention of Bolivian dignitaries with the exception of the president of Bolivia who was taking matters with his own hands and who knew these lands very well. The region next to the Brazilian border bears his name, Pando.“All who have lived in these lands and learned to know them fell captive to their irresistible charm”, Fawcett writes as part of his reflexions. Is this one of the motives he kept coming back?

The misleading title suggests that the reader will find a late model discussion from the online forum edge.org that Brockman, the editor runs. It is a pretty interesting site that features many heralded scientists as well as introducing new ones. They are often filmed in discussions informally and on topics sure to entertain and inform the viewer. It is noticeably superior to the formulaic “Ted Talks”. I have never seen Malcolm Gladwell included in discussions on this site. I take some comfort in this. However this book with a copyright of 2016 features discussions and articles that are about 10 years old. The concept of CRISPR which fills scientific publications immensely these days, is not mentioned for instance. There is some discussion of genetic engineering but not depth on the subject. Many of the 18 chapters I had either read or viewed already. The cover of the book includes names of various scientists that have appeared on edge.org but are not contributors to the book. Over all I think highly of edge.org but like any product, we cannot like everything. The compilation that Brockman put together follows that understanding.None the less and complaints aside, it was pretty good reading. I want my thoughts to be provoked and this compendium satisfied that. Several of the contributors I have grown weary of over the last few years. The ego of Craig Venter has been irritating to me but he was there for many pages and though I read or saw much of what he said already, I did not find his ideas annoying but rather food for thought. Likewise Freeman Dyson’s prickliness about climate change has rubbed me the wrong way but I found his single chapter and contribution to another to be likewise interesting reading. Finally the futurist Ray Kurzweil has not convinced me that soon we will all have IQs of 175 and we will live to be 175 too. However, I found his part of the discussion on Biocomputation to be insightful and provide fuel for future research. The intentions of Brockman’s choice of articles was to better describe evolution and while reading the book I kept thinking of the difference between the scientifically shunned notion of teleology and juxtaposed it with teleonomy. There is no design to evolutionary changes. Evolution does not involve a plan towards an ideal state it just keeps us animals fed and allows us to breed.Richard Prum’s article about duck sex really got me thinking about why certain features of animal physiology and behavior have come to be. No details will be given away from this quarter but Prum writes about the uniqueness in mallards and leads the reader to think about how and why things develop. Teleonomy was the biggest take away I got from this book. There you have it. Eighteen articles that included around twenty five contributors are all laid out to give readers some food for thought. Have at it.

Excellent book and very well structured. Even a layman can understand the concepts.

It's an EDGE book and as such every Brockman's books has unique serendipitous value on own that helps me choosing, keeping track or amending the vector of my interest!.

The book is a valuable compilation of scientists and life long researchers on life including evolution, biology, biotechnology and the theories about the future of life in this planet. You may not support all the view points but it stimulate readers to think and study further about the topics and content of the book.

very interesting. As always with Craig Venter. And some others.

thanks

Too many reviews do not address the merits of the book. Very solid book. Should be a launching point for further exploration. Really enjoy these collections.

It's a wonderful book and an actusl one
