Believable characters, strong plot and a good deal of action.The book protrays what might very well be a forecast of our future in the event of an EMP event. I see the reactions of most of the characters as highly plausible and a few, not as likely. But All-in-all a realistic and brutal series of events that could well take place if our society breaks down.Jack Hunt paints a no-holds-barred picture of humanity at its low point. Several times I was surprised at how the plot would shift and shock me. Don't get too attached to all of the characters. If they're not born survivors, they may not make it to the end of the book.

I really enjoyed the first book and have read many of the author’s books. The second book was even better than the first. The boom follows up after the first five days or so of the EMP attack and Tyler, Erika, and Nate are in Whitefish with Tyler’s family. Gabriel is seeking vengeance for his twin brothers death and going after Corey with all he has. The book adds a new character, Jude, who has another survival group camped near Whitefish. An interesting twist for Tyler becomes known and now he knows why his “father” was pushing him harder than Corey when growing up. Great read and looking forward to the next book in April.

A cast of characters that will keep the reader wondering what is going to happen next. Lots of twists and turns in this one and action galore.A new character, Jude, is brought into the mix early in this one. As one might expect, the breakdown of the town of Whitefish, Montana, begins soon after the EMP hits.Most interesting mix of characters, a solid plot and the reader is in for an excellent read. The writing is crisp and action abounds for the duration.Will definitely keep reading this series.Most highly recommended.

By far the worst "prepper" book I have ever read. This is writing at a 7th grade level. Terrible! I should have known it would be after struggling through War Buds. At least attempt to know what you are writing about!!! I will never purchase another book by this author.

OUTSTANDING BOOK as to be expected. Book 2 is as outstanding as book 1 was. If you enjoyed the story so far be sure to read the full series.

What a surprise ending! Great story! A little to real in places but probably true to life! Looking forward to reading the next adventure!

About the Author

Nate Berkus began his career in design at a young age. I love Nate Berkus and I love his work, which is why I purchased this book. However, the content is more Room Design 101, with some lovely photography. I've collected some beautiful design books over the years but this doesn't add to my existing knowledge or ability.It might be a perfect gift for a recent college grad or newlyweds setting out to start their first home.

Nice book. Great perspective

I'm not a decorator. I don't have an eye for colors and what matches and what doesn't. I must admit that every home that I've had, my mother has decorated for me. Nate Berkus and his book have allowed me to grow up and begin to decorate my house on my own. His ideas are so simple, but with an enormous impact. He details every aspect of home decorating to include painting as well as how to decorate mantels, bookshelves, and other places that sometimes aren't considered in home decorating. The pictures are very beautiful and full of color. If you are a fan of Oprah and especially Nate, then this book is a must have.

As a fan and biased reviewer (based on that fact) I enjoyed this book very much. The book seems true to the inspirations and styles that Nate represents in all facets of his brand. Did it transform me as a "wanna be" designer, no, but did I enjoy the books amazing photographs, approachable nature and overall experience and thirst for design inspiration, YES. A stunning book for the Nate fans out there who won't be disappointed...but remeber it is a book and not going to give you the ability to be Nate, just some great insights to create our own style journey, so enjoy....

Berkus has nice taste, but I read more in the editorial coverage of this book than is in the book. Lots of nice photos, but nothing terribly new. There are much better books, like the Domino book, or Apartment Therapy.....

What can I say? I think that Nate Berkus is one of the most talented decorators in his industry! I am collecting his books so I believe I still have one to go!

Its pretty basic on colors. Did not find it too helpful. I have come up with better decorating ideas!

I agree with a loot of the reviews on this not being the most brainy book. Most of the comments in the book are, at best, clichés. But the pictures are great, even those of Nate in those weird, unnatural poses. The book does however present some very interesting, and in some cases even innovative design solutions. The style is very Nate, kind of modern-classics. Totally worth the cash, who reads interior books anyways?

About the Author

Michael J. Broyde is Professor of Law at Emory University School of Law and a Senior Fellow at Emory University’s Center for the Study of Law and Religion. He served for many years as the Yoshev Rosh (chair) and a dayan (judge) in the SouthEast Rabbinical Court for Conversion which was part of the GPS Conversion network. He also served as a dayan in the Beth Din of America and as its director. He was the Founding Rabbi of the Young Israel in Atlanta as well, where he served for many years as the rabbi. A summer grant from Emory University School of Law supported the writing of this work, as did a grant from the Tam Institute of Jewish Studies at Emory University.

This is an excellent book.Even though this slim little book is only 167 pages long, it is very heavily sourced and it has answers to almost every single question that a ger could think of.Where is this author coming from?1. He is not treating conversion law as a floating abstraction. He is someone who had boots on the ground for many years and actually DID conversions.2. He does a good job compiling/ going through current rabbinic literature. And that alone is helpful, because many of these journals are very hard for a non specialist to find. The references all in one place (alone) makes the book worth its purchase price.3. The backbone of the book is from the four parts of Shulchan Arucha. Orach Chaimb. Yoreh Deahc. Even Haezerd. Choshen Mishpatwith appropriate inserts from contemporary poskim/gaonim (Harav Moshe Feinstein, etc).What use is this (in the Orthodox context, because that is the way that I converted)?1. Because of the intensity of the involvement in Orthodox life, Rabbaim don't have as much time to spend with every single parishioner and so if you have questions, the best and first choice is to LOOK UP what you want to know.2. Because Orthodox conversion does not happen all that much, a lot o/ mostf Rabbaim don't even *know* a lot of things about which a ger might have questions. And if they were to try to find them, then it might take such a long time for them to source the information that you would have forgotten what you asked about anyway.What might this be helpful for? Many things.1. If you have someone who has a bad attitude toward converts (and you will find this a bit more often than you would like if you happen to be a black person who is a convert among Haredim), then you have ammunition to show them exactly where they are doing something wrong.2. If you have questions aboutIt would not hurt to read this in conjunction with Pledges of Jewish Allegiance: Conversion, Law, and Policymaking in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Orthodox Responsa (Stanford Studies in Jewish History and Culture)Verdict: Worth the price. Worth the time. Recommended.

Many new parents, this writer included, wore out their copies of What to Expect the First Year. For the parents just starting out, this was their go-to guide to navigate the often turbulent their first year of parenthood.For the new convert to Judaism, once their conversion completes, they are often left in a whirlwind, with many questions, and often not a whole lot of resource to turn to. They need a similar guide to help them navigate down their newly found religious path.In A Concise Code of Jewish Law for Converts, (Urim Publications 978-9655242492) Rabbi Michael Broyde (professor of law at Emory University) has written a useful reference that can assist the convert in navigating the often challenging first year and beyond.In this monograph, Broyde has a written an extremely helpful resource that can be used by converts to quickly find answers they need on a variety of topics. Broyde has arranged the book around the 4 sections of the Code of Jewish law, and has encapsulated pretty much every topic that is relevant to a convert. The book discusses the entire lifecycle the convert must traverse; from their relationship with their now non-Jewish family, how to deal with certain texts in prayer, marriage, business dealing and more.Broyde doesn’t deal with any aspects of an actual conversion or the laws relating to how it works. Rather it deals with the laws relating to how the convert is to observe halacha once they are full members of and within a Jewish community.The book is relevant not just to a convert, but to all member of the Jewish faith. Broyde reiterates the imperative that a convert be made to feel welcome into the overall Jewish community. For the convert, the approach Broyde take is to accept them with a kindler gentler feel. For the community as a whole, Broyde stresses the need to be lenient where feasible, albeit being loyal to halacha at all times. All with the goal of making the convert feel welcome.Broyde wrote this book to help ensure that the convert finds their proper place within the community. Nothing is more appealing to God than that the convert be welcomed into the community. To which this is a book that should be on the reading list of every member of the Jewish community. Those old, and new.

Rabbi Michael J. Broyde has collected the rulings concerning converts from various Orthodox Jewish sources and presents them to readers in a clear fashion. Conversion is not a subject discussed in the Hebrew Bible. The laws relating to converts is rabbinical. Broyde does not focus on the process of becoming Jewish, but how converts act and how others should act toward them after they become Jewish.He emphasizes that rabbinical law placed a duty on Born-Jews to love converts, meaning treat them with great kindness. They should not be treated as coverts, but as Born-Jews. No one, for example, should ever remind them that they were once non-Jews.Rabbi Broyde speaks about the convert's relationship with his non-Jewish family which should be friendly, transition issues in being a Jew who had been a non-Jew, marriage laws for a convert, certain limitations placed upon coverts regarding positions of authority, and a convert's using prayers that speak of ancestral Judaism (they should read the prayers as Born-Jews do).Among much else, the rabbi states that converts may mourn the death of their non-Jewish relatives. Although a convert is in many ways a new person after converting, converts must repay loans made to them when they were non-Jews and loans they made at that time to Jews must also be repaid. The book is very friendly to converts. The rabbi notes, for example, that "converts seem to be especially knowledgeable and scrupulous about mitzva performance,” that is, doing what Judaism teaches.
