Danica G. Hays, PhD, LPC, NCC, is an associate professor of counseling and chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University. Dr. Hays served as Founding Editor of Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation, a national peer-refereed journal of the AARC, and is Editor of Counselor Education and Supervision, a national peer-refereed journal of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. She served as President of the AARC in 2011-12. This short book is a well written tight narrative that kept me reading, not putting down the book, until I had reached the end. The story, which actually happened to a sailor of the Columbian navy, was serialized in a newspaper in Columbia for which Marquez worked. The story had already been reported in the news when Marquez began to serialize the narrative, going into much detail as the storyline takes the viewpoint of the shipwrecked sailor himself. The story is a testament to luck and determination, making the most of opportunity in the struggle to survive. However, it is also an excellent example of Marquez’s ability to focus on the narrative thread as the armature which holds the entire composition together. I finished the book in 4 hours and I think most readers would find this to be a great reading experience.

Marquez's breakthrough book that made his career. Written in a clear, journalistic style, the book is a quick, riveting read about a sailor surviving a shipwreck in the Caribbean Sea. A good introduction to Marquez for youth. As a surfer, I loved the story of life on the open sea.

As an old destroyer sailor who lost 15 shipmates to an unexpected confluence of two was e systems, I found the story fascinating. I did not go overboard but I relived how those who died must have felt and suffered.

This is probably my least favorite GGM book. It lacks the rich and raw descriptors that his works normally have. I do realize that this book is a somewhat fictionalized retelling of a soldier's real experiences, and as such, naturally reads differently. However this book this not grip me the way GGM's works normally do, I was not held captive by curiosity until the final pages. It was simply something I read.

I enjoy shot reads with substances. This is a great novel of heroism through survival. It is a must read. Grammar is also impressive.

Read this book in 3 days. Very interesting keep my interest n hard to put down. I found myself in his raft watching this sailor.

A quick read - This story is told in painstaking detail, and one has to admire the recall of the narrator as he recounts the circumstances of the shipwreck, the ensuing 10 days at sea and his ultimate rescue. I was able to feel the roller coaster of hope and despair experienced by narrator, the joys, surges of adrenaline, anger and frustration, determination and resignation.This book had me on the edge of my seat, but mainly because of the preface by the author - The Story of the Story. The story certainly could have stood alone when first written in a series of newspaper articles, later in book form, because the story was still in the recent collective memory of Columbians. However, if I picked up a copy without the background provided by Garcia Marquez - as some of my book club friends did -I would have been lost and frustrated, left wanting more information. The Story of the Story preface gives a depth and completion to the story of the shipwrecked sailor, makes it all the more interesting. Make sure you buy a copy that includes the preface.

Although I'm not usually a fan of this author, this book was fascinating. I read it first in Spanish and liked it so much I got it in English for my book club. It's a day by day account of a shipwreck survivor of his experiences as told to the author. The book is short, the writing clear and explicit, and the descriptions so real, the reader feels as if he/she were there.

I got African Recipes and right off tried the Curry Chicken - I'm a sucker for great chicken dishes and these turned out to be mouth water and better than described. What a great book and must have for any kitchen that wants a touch of different that tastes sensational. Pick up a few copies and share with friends as this book will make a surprisingly nice gift. Had no choice but to give it 5 stars and can't wait to try a few more of these wonderful recipes.

Another teenage girl who is smarter and more insightful than her peers, parents, and teachers...as usual, she falls in love, her classmates don't like her, her teachers don't understand her, and her home life is less than wonderful. But anyway, it's still a very interesting story. I got the Kindle edition.

I thought this was a stand alone book, or the first in a series, but I feel like there was another book I should have read before this one. It’s hard to review it based on this, I just feel confused after reading it.

i didnt realize this book was short! i hate short books. they are waste of my time and energy. the plot sucked. i cant believe that v.c. andrews wrote this! :( i will not be ordering another too soon.

Not one of the best of the V.C. Andrews collection. It is a series of small books with different female characters. Still I at least finished it and will try the next in series.

V.C Andrews is a great writer. This is a great short quick read. Cant wait to read the other books in the series.

The usually predictably disfunctional American family goes on holidays on the Mediterranean Sea. Nobody cares for each other and nobody cares (including the author) to make any connections with the history and culture of the beautiful country they are visiting. Everybody is too busy with their own very little and very miserable selves. The women are over sensitive, over assertive or aimlessly searching for themselves, the guys are insecure morons &/or ego centered cheats, with the exception of a gay couple of guys who are so honey sweet and nurturing that they would make the perfect darlings of this story, had the author remembered to make them somewhat real. It is the type of book that you would gladly leave on the shelf of the Bed & Breakfast's library where you found it. It will motivate the next guests to go out for a walk, even if it's raining.

This is one of the worst, most boring novels I have ever read, even by the standards of breezy-beach-read-without-much-literary-value (which was the exact genre I sought with this purchase). The novel centers on a family of dull people with insipid thoughts. Not one of the characters is likable. The plot points are not even interesting. Will the wife forgive the husband for his affair? Will the teenage daughter lose her virginity? Why does the adult son date a woman older than him? Each of these plot points are presented in the beginning and summarily resolved in the last chapter. In between, nothing happens. Just a hundred or so pages of uninteresting banter, descriptions of people's outfits and food, and careful following of the characters' movements around a shared vacation house. The ONLY interesting characters are the gay couple about to adopt a baby, but this plot is very much sidelined and the characters exit before the end of the novel. It was the only story line worth caring about and we don't even get to see it to the end. I don't understand how this novel has received so much positive press, except to think Ms. Straub's publishing house put some extraordinary marketing power behind it. Not worth the money or time.

It's always tricky to review a book, as it's so subjective, to not only your taste but also your mood. I enjoyed the storyline and characters fully. I guess I was hoping for more of a twist; everything became quite predictable halfway through. But it was nevertheless a very good book for the genre. Well written, well paced, and well rendered.

Yawn. Picked up The Vacationers because of all of the "hype" that seemed to surround it. Every time I logged on to Amazon, this book was "recommended" to me. Well, it was about as boring as a real life vacation with my parents. Jim and Franny want to have a vacation in Mallorca with their two children, Bobby and Sylvia and Franny's best gay couple, Lawrence and Charles. Some of the reviews I have read make it sound like some great, deep-dark secrets come out during this vacation but not much really happens. I kept thinking "Ooohhh, wouldn't it be crazy if Bobby was really gay doing it with Charles?" Or that Franny had a big secret, like she and Charles had an illicit affair when they were younger and had a baby they gave up for adoption? Anything. Just something more interesting that what was written.

Mallorca, a Mediterranean island off the coast of Spain, is where the Post family is destined to vacation for two weeks in Emma Straub's new novel, The Vacationers. The trip is planned by the matriarch of the family, Franny, whose desire is to have her family together, all in one place at the same time (whether or not they want to be there themselves), on the eve of her only daughter's departure from the "nest," as she has recently graduated high school. For me, the idea of a family vacation is cringe-worthy, at best, and I was immediately drawn in by the undercurrent and tone of the novel.Even though the structure of the novel may seem simple (chapters follow days of the vacation and their are predictable beginning and end points), it provides a calm, stable backdrop for the exciting family dynamics that unfold. Sylvia Post, the high school graduate, is witty and fresh; hers are some of the most easily quotable quotes in the book. I connected with Sylvia immediately as I held a high level of disdain for my mother at her age, as well. At one point in the novel Sylvia wonders, "What were parents anyway except two people who had once thought they were the smartest people in the world? They were a delusional species, as tiny-brained as dinosaurs."Franny and Jim, Sylvia's parents, are discovering that life in their house without children may be even worse than their life together now. Jim has just been canned from his job after sleeping with an intern, which opens up what comes to be a prevalent theme in the novel - infidelity. The couple has yet to tell Sylvia and their son Bobby, who lives in Miami with his much older girlfriend, Carmen, about the circumstances surrounding their father's "retirement." Franny has invited both Bobby and Carmen to Mallorca, reluctantly, as Franny does not deem Carmen "appropriate" for her son and their interactions are quite entertaining.The final couple along for the trip is that of Charles, Franny's long-time best friend, and his boyfriend Lawrence, who always feels like he is a third wheel around Charles and Franny and as if he is "playing catch up" for all of the years they have known each other before he was around. They have their own set of personal circumstances going on, which becomes more prominent as the story unfolds.All of these folks arrive on Mallorca with their own agenda, their own ideal for this trip; however, as the characters develop and the dynamics heat up, we find their ideas being twisted and I found my interest building as I anticipated when and how things would erupt within the group. I'm not sure how satisfied I was by the ending, but I will leave that for each reader to decide; we all bring our own stories to these characters, and the individual flavor is what makes reading a novel so personal.Ms. Straub writes some of her best characters and I thoroughly enjoyed the novel; I would highly recommend adding this to your travel bag, night stand or wherever you'll be stacking your summer reads.

This is a real help for kids taking Geometry - if they use it. The format is VERY dense, and it takes some study itself to gain facility in using it well. I do find that one really need both part 1 and part 2 of this guide if s/he wants complete coverage of a high school geometry course, so plan on investing in both. Also, the organization is somewhat odd or random it seems between part 1 and 2. These are the only reasons I did not give this study aid a 5 star rating, even though it clearly does say "part 1" -- organizationally, this is one of the weaker Quickstudy Guides. You'll need both parts even for the start of Geometry.Once you figure out where information is on the PACKED pages of the guide, it really is helpful, so I would definitely recommend it. It is ESPECIALLY good if you have a textbook like the one used at my son's school, where all of the key concepts are in bold lettering, but the key words are left out with big question marks in blanks for the kids to work out/learn in class through "inductive reasoning" and/or lecture. It might be the dumbest textbook idea yet, since the information just is NOT THERE to be read by kids who miss a day of school, or if a teacher skips lessons, etc. This guide is GREAT to fill in the book full of question marks!So, buy Part 1 AND Part 2, and you will have a complete picture of Geometry and a truly GOOD study aid.

If you are going to take a trip to another country, I Highly recommend using the Lonely Planet as your guide. These Books are always well organized and easy to read. The Guide books always include information on the best sights. They have hotel choices for every budget. I have been to 32 countries and every continent except Antarctica. I always use the Lonely Planet for practical information. They always include a section of "Dangers and Annoyances" which can help make your trip more enjoyable.

The only reason for four instead of five stars is that this did not match my 1980's experience with an LP guide for Indonesia. This guide will take you through Botswana and Namibia with great guidance, and do it well. You can travel well with this guide, but I miss the old Lonely Planet aesthetic. LP used to be about rustic travel, now it seems to be about finding experiences that people can put on Instagram and selfie their way through.I admit that I'm retrograde.

Got this guide and the one by Bradt for Botswana. The reference to the safari bookings website make it all the more worthwhile. The two books cover what I needed.

Compact, packed with useful information, good for travelling.

I dont get reimbursed the Import Fees Deposit.

Chock full of great information on the best places to go in Botswana and Namibia and since it's just published it's very up to date. It is helping me plan a road trip around Namibia and finding places that are not on the top of the list. The only issue is that the Kindle version is riddled with formatting problems so the nice clear graphics are totally muddled in sections which is a shame
