This historical account of 19th-century psychiatry in America suggests a greater sensitivity to psychological factors in medical practice than is often recognized. The book focuses on "neurasthenia," a catchall term that described a variety of "nervousness" short of insanity touching a sizable percentage of the population. Using quantitative as well as anecdotal material, the author convincingly portrays the ubiquitous nature of this complaint in all reaches of American life and the broad attempts to treat it. The book provides some interesting case vignettes and convincingly links this period with more contemporary psychiatric approaches, but much of the material has been more exhaustively covered elsewhere. This amazing little book summarizes the 19th and early 20th century Neurology journal articles describing cases of Neurasthenia, the forerunner to what we call today "Stress Disease". Of course, the vast numbers of medical practitioners practicing today still know little about these conditions, even though the majority of their patients suffer from them. Go figure.

The history of neurasthenia (hysteria) is a fascinating attempt to override a lack of empirical evidence in the 19th century. For the knowledgeable reader, it is also a cautionary tale of the distortion of social construct used by some modern psychiatrists. Fortunately, although hardly comprehensive, biomedical science is steadily revealing the fallacies of "historical" medical speculation.In the late 1800s doctors in "modern" hospitals sent post childbirth morbidity soaring to unprecedented heights. Why? The failure of physicians to wash their hands between autopsy and delivery room. The medical establishment of the day ignored the growing science of germs blaming rocketing death rates on bad mother's milk.Were medical historians to attempt to resurrect the "concepts" behind this historic medical nightmare now, the attempt would be ridiculed in biomedical circles and quite possibly the subject of intense litigation.The fashionable revival of the archaic concept of neurasthenia, declared clinically invalid and eliminated as a diagnostic category in the American Psychiatric Association's widely accepted Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV should also be viewed through the lens of biomedical progress.The "political"reclassification attempts of biomedical disease including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, formally and exclusively classified for decades as an organic neurological disorder (ICD10 G93.3), is an excellent example. Biomedical resarch tells us a great deal about the complex, but cohesive and distinct biomedical pattern of substantial autonomic dysfunction, objectively verified cognitive deficits, pathological post-exertional fatigue, CNS disordered sleep and endocrine function, and post viral immune dysfunction. Another biologically defined overlapping disorder, medically classified as a soft tissue disorder involving the muscles and pain, is fibromyalgia.Although the precise pathogenesis of biological, rarely pathogonomic, illness remains medically unclear in many organic disorders, including ME/CFS and fibromyalgia; seventy years of substantial, peer-reviewed biomedical research should be heeded and the scientifically and empirically unsubstantiated myths of previous centuries - left where they belong.As noted by British psychiatrist Eliot Slater, the resurrection of "hysteria" is a pseudo-diagnosis, which functions principally as 'a disguise for ignorance and a fertile source of clinical error'.

Before Freud is an enlightening and well written overview of neurasthenia. [The most simple present day equivalent term for `neurasthenia' is `stress'.] The myriad symptoms of neurasthenia are still widespread at the dawn of this new millennium, showing that some things change little in the course of human events. In the 21st century people speak of the symptoms of feeling `stressed out' in the same ways in which their great-great grandparents described neurasthenia. Instead of the diagnosis of neurasthenia, we now prefer to label the same symptoms by the names of `clinical depression', `chronic fatigue', `fibromyalgia', and `anxiety'.Gosling thoroughly explores one of the most common medical diagnoses of the latter 19th and early 20th century. This book presents information and data which help the reader understand the concept of neurasthenia, and reach opinions about its diagnosis and treatment more than a century ago. The book also helps the reader gain insight into changing medical and social attitudes toward some of the most common chronic symptoms that large numbers of the public still experience.Some of the commonly-held beliefs and practices of physicians more than 100 years ago persist today within `alternative medicine'. These include belief in the inseparability of the body and mind; emphasis on healthy diet and adequate rest; conservative physical medicine and the importance of exercise; and involving the patient in his/her process of healing. We also learn that the most effective `ingredients' in the health regimens employed in the effective treatment of these vague, non-life-threatening symptoms, included sympathy with the patient, and the general belief that most patients can recover from or learn to manage their symptoms.Before Freud also outlines for the reader the evolution of medical practice from holism to specialization. The reader will discover how psychiatry moved from the general practitioner's office, and gradually evolved into a medical specialty. [The same phenomena happened with most categories of illness.]One of the greatest contributions of Before Freud is that the information provides us with the realization that medical thought and public opinion does indeed shift from one generation to another. What is considered to be good medical science in one generation is commonly viewed as outdated by successive generations. Although the labels and methods of treatment have changed, the complex of symptoms once known as neurasthenia is very much a part of modern life.

Are you kidding me with this book? Why not put things on the cover that you help someone learn how to build instead of things that other people built and have nothing to do with the book itself? Listen, folks, if you do not have the skill to figure out how to MAKE A BOX out of pallets, then you probably want to rethink trying to make things out of pallets. The fact of the matter is that is essentially all this book gives you - repeated directions on how to build a box....or a ukulele. The coffee table is a little more complicated, but that's it. Why not publish the directions for that Adirondack chair? I didn't want to download something off thw internet - I wanted to pay someone for their expertise, but thw internet it is! Save your cash for a different book. Skip this one.

The cover is misleading as to what project instructions you will find inside to build. I have been researching pallet furniture online and have decided to try outdoor furniture - specifically I want to build the chair on the cover of this book. Guess what? Instructions for the chair on the cover are not included in the book... and you won't find instructions for that wooden storage trunk shown the the cover either. But if you want to make a Ukelele or frame a mirror (the only cover photo that has instructions inside), then this book will show you how.On the positive, the book has with a good section on tools and an interesting photo gallery of pallet project ideas. On a not-so-positive side, the photo gallery pretty much looks like photos from someones Pinterest board, but printed in the book. At least on Pinterest, it may link to instructions on how to build - here it is just a picture. Seeing those project possibilities, then the actual projects chosen to instruct leaves a gap. I am disappointed and plan to return the book.

From the photos on the front of the book, you would think that the projects shown would be in the book.. Some of them are, but not all of them. The ones that I was most interested in were not. Just pictures inside with no instructions on how to assemble them. I'm not an idiot as far as trying to figure out how they were done, but I think it's a little missleading.

I bought this book to learn how to make the blue trunk that is on the cover, but the 'how to' is not in the book. Just a picture that says how they would love to have this in their home. VERY MISLEADING!!!!!!!

It shows a picture of a trunk and a crib. But no instructions. This book sucks!!!!!!!

I have ordered several "pallet" books, but this is by far my favorite! I love all the great pictures and ideas of things to make! I was happy at how quickly I received the book! The seller gave excellent service, and I will be purchasing from this seller in the future!Thanks!

I bought this to use as a journal of sorts. It is perfect. Enough space for my daily notations. Doesn't skimp on Saturday and Sunday like a lot of appointment books. Handy pocket in back cover perfect for "stuff". Ever week has a new positive quote. The back pages are for notes, contacts, 2016 & 2018 calendars. The cover has a fun design I won't get tired of.

would be better as a ring binder so pages would turn easily and fold/lay flat .....difficult to maneuver to write in .

Ugly and too big for a purse calender!

I love the size of this planner, but was disappointed it didn't include August-Dec. 2016 weekly grids. I would never call it a 2016-2017 Monthly/Weekly planner, when all it has are the monthly pages for 2016 from July on. The lay flat binding isn't very flat, and there are no tabs to find the months.

The Roman law ( a.k.a. greed and power) takes the place of every man’s honor price, removes respect for the land and their own gods, takes the swords out of their hands if they accept the Roman ‘peace,’ and reaches to crush them as they realize their mistakes. But, oh!, how author Gedge re-creates their spirit, their culture, their pride in all their nobility and beauty! It is the epic of early Britain, and how wonderful the leadership of Caradoc and how formidable the nobility of Boudicca as in turn they struggle against the domination of the Romans, governor and procurator and legionnaires together. Wonderful skill, author Gedge, as she reveals human nature emerging from simple historical events and finds nobility and beauty in their suffering and struggle. This reader, however, found that somehow in converting the text from print to digital form, so many errors are introduced as torcs (neck pieces worn as a sign of status) come to the page as “tores” at least 26 times, n shows up as ‘ri’ so often as ‘and’ morphs to ‘arid’ and ‘not’ to ‘riot.’ But the most irritating and sometimes confusing is the frequent, random placement of a period (.) in the middle of a sentence or the occasional insertion of a capital letter unexpectedly in the middle of a sentence. If I were Pauline Gedge, I would feel betrayed.

This is historical fiction at its very best. Gedge is a worthy successor to Rosemary Sutcliff, who set the standard high for realism and research to create the feel and the truth of history. This masterful work has withstood the test of time. Its brilliant story line is told in three interlocking parts - from the invasion of Britain, its subjugation and resistance to Roman rule to the final defeat of the tribes in the bloody uprising that almost succeeded in changing the course of history. Gedge creates the places, culture and passion of the people in haunting fashion. Since its initial publication, I re-read this book once a year and am still moved by the beautiful writing.A word about the Kindle version. The character recognition software used to convert this book to an eBook went terribly wrong. The Kindle edition is full of errors. If you have not read the original book, then you will be puzzled at some of the words and will forever believe that the "torc" is a "tore". It is a disservice to this incredible book - truly a classic - that there was no attempt at editing and correcting all the mistakes.

This sprawling, ambitious and intricately detailed work of historical fiction covers the Roman invasion of Britain. Contrary to the cover and jacket notes, this book deals very little with Boudicca's revolt against Roman rule. Much of the book details the fall of the Catuvellauni tribe; or more specifically, Caradoc and his people.The book leaves no stone unturned, and it can be a bit tedious at times. However, the author paints a very rich picture of each character and setting and does an excellent job placing you in the middle of Roman Britain.

every now and then i come upon a novel that will stay with me for the rest of my life, and this is one of them. what a find! a novel about early britain and the fight for independence once rome has invaded, the novel centers itself around caradoc and bouidecea, two tribal chiefs who fight the seemingly invincible roman army for their freedom. this is a very personal struggle for each of them, and for their families, you don't get a broad sweeping view of things from this book, which is what, to me, made it so compelling. there is a grim, nearly claustrophobic air that hangs over it all, and so it can almost be draining to read, so beware, this is not a happy little jaunt. nonetheless, it has some of the gritty reality of sutcliff's sword at sunset. if you liked that one, you will certainly like this. it's beautifully written, and a page turner, don't let the length get you down. the romans are treated fairly, and there are even some sympathetic characters here among them. either way, i'd hate for you to miss this one, you won't regret it for one second!

Loving reading this book, it is amazing to look into who the white peoples were pre-colonization. As Earth Tribes connected to the natural world... Supportive in reclaiming roots. Loving it. The greatest way to relay her-story is thru story.... Palatable and exciting.

I read this book many years ago, and seeing a tv documentary recently about the period made we think it was worth reading again. I don't remember many details, other than the major characters, so not a terribly helpful review, sorry...

I love Richard Scarry, but these books were a little bit of a disappointment. Not only is there no story for reading aloud to my daughter (okay, I know not to expect a plot with Scarry's books), but there just aren't that many pictures and they're not as connected as I'm used to in Scarry's zany books - it's hard for us to play our "what do you see?" imagination game.

These books are mostly clipped, individual, isolated pictures taken from other books. None of the intricately detailed scenes typical of this author that keep my toddler engaged in the book and staring for hours.

These are so simple and cute! Would buy again as a gift, great value!

My 2 yr old loves these. They’re very sturdy which is important. 4 stars because the box has begun to come apart at the seams after a month. The books themselves are very tough!

Small books with no little text but fantastic drawings that stimulates the imagination! I can see it is meant to be used while on the go, as they come in their own re-usable little carrying suitcase. My 16mo likes to point at the images for us to describe them.

so name for biff's dad Phill and i think u should name the ender kimg something pls btw who cares about grammer (some people i know call it grandma) not me me no care about grammer (actualy i do but only in schooll) ohh idea:Larid becomes a pro surfer cuz he practiced 24/7 before jimmy called him so hes like so pro and he made new surf armour called life jacket and swim trunks shirt, flippers and snorkle (u can wear life jacket over shirt) life jacket +2 armour bars, shirt +3 bars, trunks + 2 flippers + speed underwater and 1 armour bar and snorkle gives water breathing when 5 or less blocks away from surface and enchanted with resperation III and gives u night vis underwater reccomended to wear while surfing but not the flippers and snorkle keep in inventory instead. full set name diver/surfer set. thx for reading this and tking

I find this series as one of the best in minecraft. If not, then it's the absolute best. Sorry when I could not review your other books because I was reading them online. Well anyways, great book! I think I have one idea, Clayton actually has a secret brother, and that would be me, really if you could add me into the series that would be amazing. His brother's name would be Spike, Starting out evil at first but then closer to the end he becomes good in the end realizing all he had done.Thanks anyways!-SpikesWarrior101

I love this series and all Dr. Block books. They are adventurous, humorous, and exciting all in one. Dr. Bock is very easily one of my favorite Minecraft authors and is close to being one of my favorite authors ever. I hope he continues to make more great books. -John Lennon
