There used to be these people called editors. I don't know what they're up to these days, but If you are one, drop this guy a line - he could use you. Even just removing the "click here" and "in this post" references apparently left over from when this book was a blog would help. While he frequently admits he doesn't know if the terms he is using are actually words, he makes no such accommodation for the word "learnt", which is one of his favorites. Ouch. Aside from torturing the English language, this is only "complete" at the level of the Table of Contents. Mr. Thilakanathan does indeed manage to glide over a lot of topics in this book... without actually touching down on any of them. After reading this, you will know that a bunch of stuff exists, but you won't know what they are or how to use them. This is truly the view from 10.000 feet. There's some value in that, I suppose.

This book is riddled with grammatical errors. The tone is written as though it were a forum post. It's clear that English is not the author's first language and he didn't get anyone to edit or even proof-read it. And on top of all that, the content doesn't even live up to the title. It's not a "complete guide" of anything. All the author does is say what his favorite tools are and then tell the reader to watch YouTube videos to learn more. So you might as well save the time it would have taken you to read this book and just go straight to the videos.

Very simple, fast, and casually written. I wish there were more details, but this will get a beginner who's never touched a single design program started in a super basic way. Easy to work through. Some of the other reviews seem to be written as though they expected a huge and highly detailed technical document for Blender (a program that is not ordinarily taught in schools, nor is a huge industry standard) in a book that is around 20 dollars. They didn't get that, and they were silly to expect it.The book effectively walks you through a bit of what you need to know to start learning.

This book gave me a basic understanding of Blender's interface, core features and concepts. It bridged my knowledge level from knowing nothing about Blender to a confidence level where I can now use the tutorials and work productively with Blender. I was up, running and begun sculpting after investing 6 hours working through the book. I will further use this book along with a printed copy of the Blender Infographic Map by gludansky.com as a quick reference.

For the very low price I paid for it, its alright. Doesn't get too in depth with anything. I think better learning would be a project from start to finish and this book is just a bunch of individual examples. It doesn't all tie together to something decent. It gave me a very basic understanding of Blender, that's about it.

Enjoyed the format of the book. The e-book version was easily readable, with excellent screen grabs and descriptions of the text.

Danan really explains Blender in a easy to understand way. I enjoy his tutorials as well and also have a few other books he has put together. Great resource I will be using as my BLENDER skills increase. Thanks Danan.

I've been weaving pine needle baskets for only 1 month with the help of this book and Nadine Spear's Basket Weaving Essentials DVD. These two information sources have already made me a confident basket maker, and I'm getting cudos from friends and family about the baskets I've done in this short period of time. I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in basketry. The photos of finished products are beautiful, and the information is very well presented.

Great book for beginners. I started with this book and now I have make over 40 baskets and they sell like hot cakes. This was the book that got me started.

This paper back book, priced at just under $10., has excellent illustrations and photos of in process and completed items. The included photos of gallery items are also an incentive to strive to produce similar items. I gave the book only four stars because I did not find a list of suppliers that would generally be included in similar instruction books, though the table of contents listed page 111 as having "notes about suppliers." There were no such notes; however, I know I can Google the internet for info about supplies, and I shall do so when I need to order supplies. But I,am surprised that such a list is missing from this otherwise helpful book. Perhaps the book is available at this discount price because of this printing error?I live in south Georgia where I am surrounded by long leaf pine trees; thus, I am fortunate to be able to simply take a short walk and gather fallen pine needles by the side of the road. Gourds, sometimes used in pine needle basketry, are also available at a huge gourd farm not too far from where I live.A few years ago I managed to take lessons in pine needle basket making and am looking forward to making some once again; I will probably purchase some fabric dye from the grocery store and will try my hand at making dyed baskets as described in this book.

I bought this book on a lark while browsing Amazon for something else; because I have two huge pine trees in my front yard and was tickled at the idea I could do something with the needles.This book is no lark.It is a complete and comprehensive guide to how to make these baskets, including gathering and preparing needles, selection of other supplies, construction techniques, decorative work, and ways to preserve your completed projects. It includes super simple and straightforward instructions for would to make several projects.I think someone could take the contents of this slim book and construct an award winning basket with the knowledge contained within.Best random purchase I have made from Amazon ever.

This is a great book for beginners and beyond. I taught a beginning class and used the basic starting information on how to prepare the pine needles and then how to start a small basket. When the students were finished with their little baskets, they all wanted to do more baskets using some of the more difficult designs and techniques, so I ordered 12 more books and we plan to get together for more basket making in the near future.

There are so many creative baskets shown in this book that I was absolutely drooling on the book the first time through! (Maybe they should water proof the pages?!) There are lots of excellent illustrations in techniques and I really like the chapter that shows more complex projects with a list of the page to find the techniques used in that project. I haven't tried my own pine needle basket yet, but I've got plans to go harvest needles this next weekend!There is inspiration to be found between the pages of this book - if you are not a basket maker at all, you may find yourself wanting to become one after reading it!

Professor Hofstadter sets the standard for the dissection of many facets of U.S. history. Here he tells the tale of the intertwining factors of American culture and politics that lead to prevalent anti-intellectualism. Although published in 1963, this remains the definitive work on the distrust of elites and experts and is sadly relevant to the present day. Hofstadter writes with a storyteller's style that does not skip or gloss over details but invites the reader to enjoy the experience of learning. He also often displays a wry sense of humor. If you want to understand why those most qualified to address issues -- whether they be foreign policy, law, running government, social sciences, etc. -- are often considered suspect sources of information while talking heads with no knowledge but loud voices are embraced, this book explains the framework for that culture. Personally, I found the writing so smooth and the subject so engrossing I could hardly take breaks between devouring the book.Hofstadter combines both painstaking detail and sweeping themes. I cannot imagine even the most learned people not learning new details about American history and the forces that have shaped our nation. Hofstadter's analysis is very persuasive -- analytical but with passion and new insights. Even events or people from American history that one knows about, one will be shown new perspectives. For example, one might not have considered how American democratic principles can encourage anti-intellectualism. Or how our economic system and intelligentsia themselves can sometimes encourage expertise and other times discourage it. It shouldn't need to be said that a Pulitzer Prize winning book is a must read, but I'll say it anyway.

Recent political development in this country, in which gossip, hearsay, "alternative facts," wishful thinking, invective, and shaming the intellectual class have become (again) coin of the realm at the highest levels of government all remind us that this is an enduring (though thankfully not always dominant) theme in our culture. Richard Hofstadter's 1964 masterwork thus points backward to the formation of these themes in American history, and points to the present and future with concern. People who worry about such things should definitely read this book, and the fact that it's now over 50 years old is of little consequence because of the way it helps us understand trends and events.

First, let me say what this book is not. It's not a book that can be understood only by deep and brilliant minds. The style is clear and readable, and anyone who can read and understand a newspaper editorial can understand what is said here. It's not a peevish rant about how everyone below a certain IQ level, or everyone of a certain political persuasion, or everyone who goes to church, must be mentally dull. The author goes out of his way to be fair and even-handed to all points of view, perhaps especially those with which he doesn't agree.Finally, even though it was published when John F. Kennedy was President, it is decidedly not out of date. In fact, anyone reading it will be amazed how the problems described here, from 50, 150, or even 200 years ago, may still crop up today.What is an intellectual? It is not necessarily someone with a genius-level IQ, or someone who speaks 5 languages, or even necessarily someone who discovers a new theory in physics.An intellectual is simply someone who takes the same pleasure in the exercise of his or her mind, in exploring ideas, as healthy and physically fit people do when they're out throwing a Frisbee or playing touch football. The pleasure is in the activity itself.Imagine a small child trying to see how many blocks she can stack up on top of each other before they fall. On the one hand, the child is playing--that is, doing something for no reason but that she enjoys it. On the other hand, she is perfectly serious and focused on her goal. If the stack of blocks falls down, she simply tries again.The intellectual is the person who shows this combination of play and seriousness towards ideas. To use the analogy of blocks again, the intellectual takes each block and turns it over to look at it from all sides, stacks the blocks up, arranges them in various shapes, and so forth.Of course this activity can have a serious purpose--e.g., thinking through the ethics of cloning--but to be a specifically intellectual pursuit, it must be done out of the love of the activity itself.America has often had a love-hate relationship with intellectualism, and still does today. Ironically, one of the ages that prized the intellect most was the Puritan era, because Puritans valued a learned ministry; after all, it was they who founded Harvard. Later, many of the Founding Fathers, such as Jefferson and Franklin, had wide intellectual interests, from philosophy, to science and the arts. Up to the middle of the 19th century, even many businessmen were cultured and well-educated--indeed, the goal of that day was to make one's fortune in trade and then retire at a relatively early age to a life of culture and philanthropy.Despite these notable periods of favor for the intellectual, it is equally true that something about American civilization has often worked against intellectualism. Part of it was that America, which began as pioneer settlements, always had to be very practical. Another aspect was the idea that cultured and educated elites were undemocratic--resentment of "the elites" didn't begin with today's Tea Party but was always an undercurrent of American life. A third aspect was that Americans tended to see the past as something dark and backward to be improved upon and then abandoned by American know-how and self-reliance.In politics, the Jeffersonian philosopher type went out with the age of Andrew Jackson. For the rest of the 19th century, intellectuals were mostly ineffectual reform types, criticizing from the sidelines, in magazine articles; they were not consulted in public life again until the turn of the 20th century. Their favor was high during the age of Wilson, perhaps even higher with Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Brain Trust," only to come under suspicion once more during the McCarthy era of the early 1950s.In business, the shift from trade to railroad building and, later, manufacturing, left the businessman less leisure for intellectual pursuits, nor was he particularly interested in having men work for him who were preoccupied with theory and speculation--enough education to read, write, and handle business math was satisfactory. In religion, the scholarly minister was replaced by the barely literate circuit rider, who rode the mountains and forests for miles to preach in log cabins to backwoods settlers. Later, it was felt that too much education might undermine religious faith, and we had the spectacle of the Scopes trial. Meanwhile, practical businessmen of that day didn't care to know about theological ideas so much as the idea of religion as a "power source" that could be turned on at will.Even literature and the arts suffered. America, unlike Europe, had no ruins of the Parthenon or medieval castles, nor did it have the same traditions of civilization. Artists and writers could certainly portray what they found here and did, but there was still a tension between merely celebrating this new land and achieving the critical distance with which the intellectual examines everything.Even education itself was not without its challenges. If you think that "the good old days" of education, when every child had 3 years of foreign language, 3 years of math, 3 years of science, and 2 years of U.S. history, lasted continuously until a couple of decades ago, read chapters 13 and 14 of this book, and they will startle you. In the name of progressive educational theories, traditional education underwent such radical changes beginning in 1910, culminating in the "life adjustment" movement of the 1940s and 1950s, that the U.S. Navy found that many of its World War II recruits required remedial math, and the president of Yale wrote, in 1954, about a high school graduate who seemed intelligent enough to attend Yale but whose high school transcript showed mostly electives in subjects like school choir, social adjustment, etc., with just a smattering of English, history, and the more traditional academic subjects.Hofstadter's final chapter addresses the tension between intellectuals who are willing to apply their knowledge and abilities to the service of institutions, including government and industry and those, on the other hand, who fear that they will "sell out" and be co-opted by conventional norms if they cooperate too much with society. Hofstadter was optimistic that it was possible for intellectuals to adopt a balanced outlook, cooperating with society and using their talents for its benefit, while always remaining independent-minded enough to apply their own original thinking to society's problems and not simply go along with the crowd.Hofstadter's untimely death from leukemia at 55, in 1970, certainly deprived America of one of her foremost thinkers. This book, one of about 6 major works that he wrote, is around 450 pages, arranged in chapters of about 30 pages apiece, with notes at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to understand how the world's most advanced society can sometimes seem, at the same time, to contain knuckleheads and dunces--some, unfortunately, in positions of power. Again, this is not new--the only question is how we will respond and what kind of society we wish to have.

America did not fight the disastrous Vietnam War during the time Eisenhower was President.We will never know how Stevenson would have done in these areas had he been elected President.

About the Author

Doug Woodham brings a unique perspective to the art market from his lifelong interest in art, business, and collecting. A trained economist with a PhD from the University of Michigan, Woodham served as president of the Americas for Christie's, the international auction house. He is currently on the board of the arts venture Twyla. Earlier in his career, he was a partner with McKinsey and Company, working primarily with asset and wealth management clients. He continues his advocacy for collectors by advising private clients on legacy planning associated with their art collection, including helping them to asses alternative disposition strategies. Woodham and his wife, who are based in New York City, are avid collectors with a focus on drawings by artists associated with minimalism, conceptualism, and land art.

Doug Woodham provides an incredibly helpful roadmap of the network of museums, galleries and auction houses which make up the art world and how they have changed the way people buy, sell and experience art over the past couple decades. The writing style is engaging and the book is a fun read - which is not to say that it is light on substance - Doug introduces some complicated issues, like how cultural property laws affect the art market in different countries; I have picked the book up several times since finishing it to refer to a specific topic. The many examples of artists, buyers and sellers are very informative as are tips for novice collectors to purchase art wisely. I would strongly recommend the book to anyone looking for an introduction to the art world, or people who are interested in collecting art and are looking for some advice on how to start an art collection or to learn more about collecting strategies and habits.

Really liked it! Woodham's writing is clear and interesting, drawing in the "lay person" without making it banal for the art expert or the art professional. I liked especially Woodham's lively, real-life examples to illustrate how the art market works and how it has evolved over time. The book identifies the key players; explains why the art market is still much narrower than some other markets/asset classes, like stocks or bonds or Real Estate; points to where inefficiencies may lie; and suggests what potential investors and collectors have to be most careful about. Especially how to avoid some of the heavy "fluff" that hits every art "newcomer" head-on. Woodham's book hints at how this market would (should?) evolve if more "analytical" approaches found their way more into it. It is an excellent introduction for new collectors and casual observers, and an even better reminder for those who took the plunge a while ago but now should come up for air before diving into it again. And all that, without taking away the fun of loving art! Good read!"

After visiting the Dallas Art Fair and catching Doug Woodham on a panel discussion, I immediately purchased his book and found it to be very insightful for the new artist and collector like myself. His chapters on “Best Time to be an Artist”, and “Putting a Price on an Artwork” are well worth the price of this book alone! For an artist like me, it is a wonderful reminder that potential art buyers from all over the world are wanting to purchase art work. For buyers or sellers of art from family estates, galleries, or auction houses, this book is invaluable!

Doug Woodham offers a demystifying and insightful look at the modern and contemporary art market in general – the artists, collectors, advisors, galleries, and auction houses that comprise it, the forces driving it, and how it got the way it is – all illustrated with surprising and entertaining stories. A very engaging and enjoyable read.

The book is written in a clear and fluent how-to-succeed-in-ten-steps style. It lists many recommendations for potential art collectors. Most of the recommendations are quite obvious, but some are informative. I mainly enjoyed reading the advice in regard to the taxes to be paid when selling an item and how to avoid the estate tax. Unfortunately the book doesn't address artistic questions such as, what criteria are relevant for judging the "real" value of a picture.

Terry Pratchett was brilliant and the master of a fantasy sub-genre that probably belongs to him alone. Mort is a novel set in Discworld. The Discworld novels fall into different categories: Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, the three witches, Sam Vines and the guards, and Death. Each book focuses on one of them, although they cross over and pop up in each others' books all the time. It is best if you start from the beginning of a particular grouping and work your way through, otherwise you'll miss a lot of inside jokes, references, etc. There are charts on the internet that will show you the groupings. You can trust Terry Pratchett to not be too linear and to not be very predictable. Mort is an early novel of Death. Mort is a bumbling young adolescent of no particular talent when his father takes him to the job fair to find an apprenticeship. Just at the stroke of midnight, Death arrives to offer Mort the apprenticeship. Death lives with his man servant, his daughter, and Binky, an immensely powerful horse, at a compound of his own creation. Like all of the Discworld books, the tone is satirical and clever. This book did not make me laugh out loud like Wee Free Men, but it was amusing. Ankh Mopork is much the same (a city impossible to describe here). Mort is sincere but naïve. Death is suffering from burnout and mayhem ensues. Somehow, Terry Pratchett makes all the nonsense work. These books do not contain any scenes, language, or images that would rate even a PG-13 rating at the movies. If a reader does not have sufficient maturity, much of the book will be wasted, because you won’t get the jokes or understand the satire. I count myself lucky to still have so many novels of Discworld ahead of me.

Mort is an awkward young man. He’s not really good at anything. His dad isn’t even sure what to do with him. So he takes young Mort to a job fair in town with the hopes of passing him off to someone else. No one seems interested in choosing Mort as an apprentice until just before midnight. Someone on a white horse and wearing a black cape comes up and offers Mort a job. Mort’s father believes the position is for an undertaker; but in reality the anthropomorphic personification of “Death” himself offers young Mort a position as his apprentice. Thus begins a pretty darn funny adventure as Mort does his best (and continually fails) to learn to be “death”.I believe this is book four in Terry Pratchett’s “Diskworld” series. It was recommended to me by a friend and he assured me that I didn’t need to read the previous three books to be able to read this one. He was right. While it’s my understanding that “death” makes appearances in some of the other books, I was perfectly able to follow along in this one without any prior introduction to the series. The book is silly – downright ridiculous at times, but is genuinely funny. There are almost laugh out loud moments in the book and Pratchett does a good job of painting a Mort character that all of us can relate to at different points in our lives. The humor and style of the book is not something that I would probably choose to read all of the time, but served as a great “pallet cleanser” between more serious novels. I certainly did enjoy the story and wouldn’t hesitate to read Pratchett again when I’m in the mood for a good laugh. Well done.

Pratchett is one of the greatest writers of our time, maybe all time. Discworld is one of the most amazing, vibrant, and spellbinding fantasy worlds ever conceived. Each book adds another piece to the rich fabric of this imaginary landscape, yet they can be enjoyed in any order. I find my favorite characters to be the ones occupying whatever Pratchett book I'm reading at the moment. There is humor and purpose dripping from every line of text that graces a Pratchett novel. Not a single word is wasted, nor abused. His spirit lives on in each fantastic journey through the Discworld. May he rest in peace. There is no need to review this book alone. If you're looking for a cookie cutter fantasy novel, Terry Pratchett is not for you. If, however, you seek a more profound experience from your literature than no single book by Terry Pratchett will ever be enough. I have read these books many times over.

Every year since our twins with tiny we would wrap picture books and put them under the tree on Dec. 1 and they would unwrap one each night until Christmas Eve and we would read it before bed. A tradition they looked forward to each year. They are getting older now and the picture books are not as exciting, so we have adopted a new tradition in the same vein. We love the love create from this book. It's a bit cheesy, Death is one of our favorite characters and Pratchett is simply a priceless author. So, when I came across this beautiful copy of the book I immediately knew what our new tradition would be. Starting this year we start reading the Hogfather each night as our countdown to Christmas, then watch the movie on Christmas Eve. We love it. This copy is unique, beautiful, and will be treasured.

If you've never worked for a well organized company with a good management culture and have not studied management, this book could offer some short-cuts.I would have given it three stars for the general management content which might be useful for novices, but I thought the book lacked any new information for seasoned managers looking to improve on their Virtual team management skills, or looking for advice on how to setup or grow a new remote team.

I worked on projects where some members of the team were not local, so I am well familiar with the issues that arise working with people that are remote. The author provides no-nonsense suggestions on how to make teams with remote members work more effectively. The advice is not your generic "improve communication among your team" but rather very specific and concrete.The vast majority of the techniques are incredibly simple to implement, yet has been proven by case studies (the author includes references) to be effective. For example, giving a reason of why you are asking someone to do something increases compliance of carrying out the request by 33% compared with a request which had no explanation.Many other techniques are just as simple. Writing down tasks and commitments increases the probability that the tasks will be done by the virtual team. Setting specific deadline (as opposed to "I need it in a couple of days") and assigning specific people to be responsible for the task (rather than assigning a group of people without a specific individual responsible for the outcome) also improves the timeliness of the task completion.Some of the tips are less obvious and struck me as the opposite to what I have seen at work. A team that is located in the same area has a chance to socialize in the hallways so they have a chance to interact in a non-work related conversations. This forms bonds and friendships between individuals. With a remote team it is the manager's job to create such environment, so the author suggests starting some meetings with some off-topic discussions and a bit of banter to build those social bonds which otherwise might not form.This is an easy to read book. If you work with a remote team you probably do some of the things the author goes over in his book, but I suspect most people do not take advantage of all of the techniques. They are simple and effective. Some of the tactics have a number of steps or parts to them to really make it work. He organizes and re-caps the main points of the tactic where you could easily print it out and put it next to your computer to remember.Lastly, Osman has prepare a few "extras" for the reader. He provides links to downloadable templates to help you be successful with your virtual teams. If you lead any kind of team (virtual or other) this is book you should read.

The tips here in the book while they may seem obvious as you read them are explained in a concise enough manner that you're not getting a bunch of fluff. Hassan gets straight to the point of each tactic and doesn't spend a lot of words making things sound harder than they really are.Some could say much of the contents of this book are obvious and need no explanation, but having been on several kinds of teams, you'd be amazed at what seems obvious to some is the complete opposite to others and sometimes putting the obvious in print is a good way to get it out there and into the hands of those who may not know better.This book is short, to the point, and will definitely help you work with virtual teams

I found this book extremely practical and useful. As with most of the best leadership books and trainings, it leads you to an understanding that most of the solution lies within you, as the leader, more so than by asking others to behave a certain way. I came away realizing that to manage my remote team, I need to trust more, be more robust in my accountability, and question my need for control. This book made me think, and that makes it worth the price tag, for sure.
