Here's the deal..........you may, or may not have a test coming up. Do you blow it off and risk failure........or do you study? Someday, you likely will called upon to be the caretaker for a parent, in-law, sibling, neighbor, friend, etc. Being a caretaker is a HUGE test...........a test of your patience, love, stamina, mental toughness, organizational skills, time management, and more. Like Jean Lee, I was the sole local caretaker for my mother who spent more than ten years in assisted-living. Also like Jean Lee's sister, my sister and brother were extremely helpful but lived over 1000 miles away. I was lucky........I didn't have to deal with the added headaches of family squabbles, contested legal issues, estate nightmares, or financial shortfalls.Obviously, being a caretaker is a "labor of love"...........with a giant emphasis on "labor". It will tax all of your systems in ways you cannot imagine. So, how do prepare for your role as caretaker? Start by reading "Alzheimer's Daughter". Jean Lee has done the impossible..........she has taken a subject that's as glamorous as a "stopped up sink", and created a book that you won't want to put down. Jean's creative style and writing skills will keep you glued to the story.........and she will have you laughing and crying as her family's journey unfolds. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to being a caretaker.............you just do the best you can. But Jean's book is a "Guidepost" for any future caretaker. She and her sister (and their families and friends) show you the path..............and the obstacles that you will encounter on your journey.I concur with the other book reviews: Jean gets an "A+" for her literary effort. As a former caretaker, I also give Jean and her sister an "A+" for their herculean efforts on their parents behalf. Somewhere, Angels are looking down on them and smiling.........and saying: "Well done girls!"
The Alzheimer’s literature continues to grow reflecting the increasing number of people diagnosed. Author Jean Lee helps raise awareness of this frightening and incurable illness through telling the story of her parents, Ed and Ibby Church, and their late-in-life simultaneous decline due to dementia. Lee does a good job of describing her parents before their diagnosis: stand-up members of their church and community, a successful businessman and homemaker, loving parents to their two daughters and devoted life partners. The Church family enjoyed a comfortable and predictable life in a small town in Ohio. These blessings and routines, though, were no talisman against the wanton destruction that Alzheimer’s brutally and systemically unleashes on these octogenarians. Two things make this a remarkable book. First, Lee and her sister, Annette, are a formidable team, realistic about their parents’ challenges and pragmatic about the solutions. I enjoyed reading about them successfully managing their parents’ difficult decline. Secondly, the story’s ordinariness - written in a slice-of-life manner - gives it its awful power. If these salt-of-the-earth people can be felled, who among us is safe? The Churches, in their kind but sad goodness, tell us: no one. It’s a credit to this family that they shared such a devastating story as a service to others who may have family with dementia.Forgetting is the curse of Alzheimer’s, but being forgotten is an even bigger tragedy. By telling their story - their whole story - Lee honors her parents while also bringing to light this dark disease.
I discovered this beautiful memoir while searching for books on Alzheimer's caregiving. I've actually read it twice now, and it brings back bittersweet memories of caring for my parents from the earliest stages of this hideous disease to a peaceful end for my mother. I'm sure it wasn't easy to write, but I'm so glad Jean Lee shared her parents' letters and her experience of stumbling through caregiving. I only say stumbling because as soon as you think you've gained solid footing, the ground shifts beneath you again. The worry, uncertainty, stress and all of the love as well are captured in this memoir. It is a must read for anyone who has struggled with the roller coaster of caregiving.
