This was a great book on the Middle ages. Starr did his research for this one, and it showed in the book. I'm sure murder and mayhem happened quite a bit during medieval times. Death was more taken for granted, and less than a shock than it often is now. Between plagues, accidents, lack of food or health care...life was usually short and hard. It's amazing that lives were still lived, children were born, people were most definitely closer to the God, and even art was accomplished. I think if most of us were thrust back in that time period, we die from discouragement and desperation.The history in this tale actually made up a significant part of the reason I gave this four stars. I love history with anything. I use history in all my science classes to make the science more applicable and memorable. Good history in a mystery like this keeps my attention. I appreciate the research the author does. A young man who is not the inheritor of his father's estate, Hugh de Singleton, decides to become a surgeon. He starts his practice in Oxford, but comes to the attention of a local lord, who asks him to become involved when the skeleton of a woman is found in the castle's cess pit. First thing, is to find out who is missing from where. In a day, when forensics has not even been thought of yet, Hugh must use his powers of observation and deduction to figure out what ends up being not just one murder, but several.This is a highly enjoyable, and 'safe' book. What I mean by safe, is there isn't bad language in this book, or a lot of sex. I personally don't enjoy either of those in books all the time. If there is too much of either, I'm liable to put the book away. If that makes me a prude, so be it. I just choose not to clog up my mind with unnecessary crap.If that's your preference this looks like the series for you. Like I said, great history, good mystery makes for a fun mix.
This really held my interest from the first chapter. Characterization is vital to a successful mystery for me and this does not disappoint. The plot is well-designed and intriguing. What can you discover from just bones in the 14th century? Even though forensic science is not available, Hugh discovers clues others overlook in following the trail to a killer. You get a deep perspective of period life which is why I now read exclusively historical fiction. Most of all, I enjoy Hugh's perspective on life and faith. When he stops on the bridge to star at Shill Brook, I can identify with the mesmerizing flow of a passing river. He is thoughtful and contemplative, yet diligent in his pursuit of justice. I have purchased the rest of the series.
A great whodunit set in Medieval England. Slow and ponderous at times, but not out of step with the characters living at a time when it took 2 days to ride 50 miles. Despite the slow pace, there are enough plot twists to keep the reader guessing, and the main character, while no Sherlock Holmes, sure has his moments. The reason I gave this book 4 stars and not 5 is really my skepticism about the conclusion. I found it hard to believe. I am much more inclined to believe "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" version of medieval justice that what happened in "The Unquiet Bones". Call me a skeptic, but it seems the conclusion was driven more by the author trying to appease his own sense of justice than the reality of the time. A little SPOILER. A common man found not guilty of murder by claiming his victim, a nobleman, attacked first, when the only testimony to this fact came from the guilty man himself? Not likely to be believed by any modern court (at least not without more evidence), and even less likely by a medieval one. And the reason the crime was committed, while it would tug at the heartstrings, would not excuse a man when he killed a person whose life was valued a hundred times more than his own. And a king's judge (himself a nobleman) listening to a jury and releasing a commoner guilty of a nobleman's murder? Not likely at all. Mel Starr is a historian, so I suppose his version of events is consistent with his research, but it doesn't make the ending any more believable. This inconsistency aside, a great book. Well worth the time.
What an excellent idea - to merge in the medieval England of Edward III, a surgeon who becomes a bailiff, with the potential for religion, law, history, and medicine! It may sound like an odd combination, but Melvin Starr's debut novel of Hugh de Singleton, surgeon (and later, bailiff to the interesting and rather likeable Lord Gilbert, third Baron Talbot and lord of Bampton) is a pleasant surprise. The author shows a firm grasp of his history - and of course, manages to move the remarkable John Wycliff, Lord of Balliol, into a couple of pertinent scenes - his plotting is careful and well set out. But I was most impressed with our new hero, Master Hugh. He is a man of parts ranging from modest to intriguing, and it's a fun read! I agree with the other reviewers, we can cheerfully hope that this will b e the first of a series.
I like the concept of this book, which takes place in medieval Oxford and locations nearby. Hugh de SIngleton trains as a surgeon and hangs his shingle in Oxford, a university town of dons, students, and townsfolk. The author has done some research of the period, but as a historian, I would've liked to seen more. I like the twists and turns as the mystery unfolds, but would like to see more historically accurate details. Small things like his horse would probably be a palfrey, he would rarely bathe, and most inhabitants would be superstitious of travelling, especially through forests. Life in the medieval ages was dark, smelly, and dirty. Nearly everyone was illiterate, learned about their faith directly in church (and were fined if they failed to attend), and celebrated the yule with the biggest log they could find (they would party as long as the log burned). Anyway, I'd like to see this author develop and dig deeper into the history of the period. His character has great potential.
